BEGIN DUST FIGHT WITH JEJUNE 22 Members of Works Board Let Contract at 2 2-3 Cents Per Yard.
Work on fighting the dust nuiBance on those streets which are to be oiled under public contract -will start two weeks from today and is to be completed, weather permitting, by July 15. This agreement was entered into today by H. W. Curry, of Baton, O., successful bidder for the oiling contract, awarded by the board of public works today. His bid was 2 2-3 cents per square yard. The only other bidder was Charles Davis, who entered a bid of 2 cents. This year the city is to pay the cost of oiling the street intersections so the cost to the property owners will be less than last year, when they had to pay for oiling intersections. Last year the cost to property owners overaged a little over 2, cents per square yard. Mr. Curry said that when he finished his public contract he would oil any other streets under private contract according to the plans and specifications of the city engineer but said he would have to ask a slightly increased price to cover any possible losses, unless paid in advance for the work. Last year private contractors lost quite a snug sum of money. The City guarantees all payments for the oiling done under the public contract. Mr. Curry informed the board that he has an automatic oil applying machine and can put down 3,000 gallons of oil a day. He says if the weather is favorable he can oil nil streets named in the public contract in twelve days. For Sale Family horse, phaeton and surrey, all in good condition. Birck's Harness Store. 8-1t

Merchants Decide Against Action Giving Clerks Half Holiday, June 11.
There will be no concerted movement of merchants to close next Thursday. This decision was reached at a meeting held at noon today at the Y. M. ('. A. Representatives of the retail merchants" section of the Comenircial ciub were present. At an early meeting the proposition to close stores earlier and giving the clerks shorter hours will be considered. Merchants seem to favor the plan, instead of the plan of closing one afternoon a week. Their reason for not closing Thursday is given as the fact that the Fourth of July falls on Saturday, and all stores will close then, remaining open late Friday night. It is believed thf people who would visit Richmond Thursday would desire to trade here and would be pleased to find the stores open. Some of the larger retail merchants refused to cooperate with smaller ones, and unless the action is unanimous, it will not be carried out. A new feature which was added to the program (his afternoon is a parade for opening day. The band will be placed on the new gasoline launch, and all rowboats, canoes and other craft will fall in line behind, circling the lake.
CITY BANDS TO BID FOB PARK CONCERTS
Works Board Hopes to Start Sunday Program by Last of .Month.
An effort will he made to start the summer Sunday land concerts at Glen Miller park the last Sunday of this month. There probably will be twelve or fourteen concerts. In the city budget is an appropriation for $150. The street car company is to contribute a like sum. Charles Fetzer, privilege holder at the park, contributes $75.00. The board today ordered the advertising for bids for these concerts. The Richmond City Hand and the Cooper hand will bid and it is probable the Festival band will also bid. Kach band must have, at least. IS pieces, Fetzer at'ked the board today to increase the contribution $100, saying the street car company would do the same, but was informed that the city could not afford to take such action this year. Fetzer wanted a larger fund so two concerts a week could be given. Supt. Gordon of the street car company was asked if members of the band would receive free transportation to and from the park. He said he was willing to do this provided each bandsman would give a written guarantee to serve Gordon's time in jail. He referred to the new state public utilities commission law which prohibits the issuance of free transportation. Two band concerts are to be given at the park on the fourth of July.
PLEASE OMIT FLOWERS.
Legal Separation Only Solution of Problem. Editor Palladium: I have no sympaty for Helen and Warren. I think the sooner they come to blows and end it all by asking friends to "please omit flowers" the better it will b for both. It will be something gone and nothing missed. But what puzzles me is which is the child, Winifred or Pussy Purrmew? Pussy Purrmew always curls up in Warren's easy chair or Helen's lap. It seems to be Pussy Purrmew who receives all their attention. Helen even gives Pussy Purrmew a bath. Now when did we ever hear of Winifred sitting on Helen's or Warren's lap? much less getting a bath. I thought perhaps it may be that Winifred wras the cat Mrs. J. N. Lv

HEAT SWELTERS CITY Mercury Returns to High Altitude.
Humanity is again sweltering in the midst of a mid-summer heat wave. The official temperature at the pumping station this noon was 00, but many down town thermometers showed the mercury to be hovering close to the century mark. The weather record of the past week shows Thursday to be the hottest day of the year, the maximum being U2. The rain Thursday night was the signal for a brief cool wave, the maximum Friday being but 71, the coolest of the week.

CHAUTAUQUA SEEKS BRYAN FOR LECTURE
