OCEAN LEVIATHAN REACHESJEW YORK Vaterland, Largest Ship Afloat, With 2,958 Pasengers, Makes Maiden Voyage Across Atlantic. BY LEASED WIRE NEW YORK, May 21 The New Ham burg-American liner. Vaterland,
the greatest ship afloat, became unmanageable today when she attempted to dock at the company's pier at Hoboken. The tucs that were guiding her were pulled about like infants by a giant, and the vessel had to be taken a mile down the Hudson river to prevent her smashing into the pier. The VaXerland arrived here today from Hamburg, Cherbourg and Southampton on her maiden voyage. The total of human souls on board the leviathian was 2,958. The steamer made an average run of about tweto.ty-four miles an hour. On board were the directors of the line. The day runs were 421, .578, 562, 680, 595, 594 and 442 knots. Dock Commissioner Smith went to Quarantine and boarded the steamer in response to an invitation to inspect the giantess. The Vatrland is a sister ship of the Imperator. Nine Hundred and Fifty Feet Long. The immensity of her measurements are showed by "the following figures: Tonnage, 58,000; length, 950 feet; beam (width), 100 feet; horsepower, 65,000; speed, twenty-five knots an hour. In addition to being the last word in luxury, the Vaterland was constructed to be unslnkable. Her bulkheads are of steel, and she has two "skins", so that if the outer hull is punctured, the water will be kept out of the hold by the inner wall. In addition to being unsinkable, the Vaterland is foreprooif. The big ship was decorated by flags as she slowly steamed up the bay, and her sirene occasionally answered the Chorus of whistles and forhom bursts that welcomed the new liner. The cargo consisted of 2,316 barrels, of which 2,066 was beer and the balance salt.
