El Independiente Assures Readers Federals Cross Rio Grande to American Soil.
WASHINGTON, May 19. "At the head of twenty thousand men General Joaquin Maass -will invade Yankee territory,'.' announced in black headlines the newspaper El Independiente of Mexico City. Copies of the edition In -which Huerta's alleged ambitious plans to seize Texas are outlined were received here today. The article says: A11 the contingents brought togethBr here pass twenty thousand men in Dumber and form the f rst federal army, which is marching to invade American territory to fight in their own cities those who show themselves valorous when under the protection of the canon of their cruisers. "There is an indescribable enthusiasm to fight the enemy and a large number of patriotic citizens have volunteered to join the ranks of the ar: my. It is confirmed in such a way as to leave no room for doubt, that a large part of Eagle Pass has been burned by General Guarjardo. Sack U. S. Towns. "Persons who have arrived from that city bring back detailed accounts and give assurance that several other American towns have been severely castigated by the troops of the government. "Already I have procured an interview with a person who was present at the burning of the American city and I will send details and photographs which this person has brought here. "In every manner is confirmed by the words of eye witnesses the partial destruction of a city which was the pride of the invaders. "The Mexican forces will divide into two parts, penetrating American territory by Ciudad Porfirio Diaz and Laredo."
TRAVEL Jl HEARSE Spokane Family Rescued by Undertaker.
SPOKANE, Wash., May 19. Fifteen miles across country in a hearse was the unique trip taken this week by a party of Spokane women and children after their automobile had broken down near Cheney, Wash. While the stranded wayfarers looked sadly at their balky machine S. M. Smith, a Spokane undertaker, came along with his automobile hearse. This was one time the man of funerals was welcome. Mrs. William Pitman and daughter and Mrs. Frank Chapman and daughter gaily climbed into the hearse, leaving Mr. Pitman and Mr. Chapman to tinker with the machine. Raising the curtains within the hearse the wayfarers proceeded to enjoy the trip to Spokane. The big black vehicle rolled through country and village, white spectators looked aghast at the smiling faces of women and children that peeped out at them from the confines of the hearse. When the hearse reached the suburbs of Spokane bystanders looked horror stricken to see a party of four live persons emerge and get aboard a street car.
The following officers were named for the ensuing year; Charles Callaway, president; William Jeffries, vice president; Miss Miriam Parkins, secretary-treasurer.
Tte BY MILLIONS
DETROIT, Mich., May 19. One million two hundred fifty thousand tires
for this year's production of Ford cars is the estimate made by officials at the Ford factory in Highland Park, Mich. This immense quantity will be supplied by four leading American tire companies. The tires arrive in daily shipments of sufficient quantities to keep pace with the production of the Ford factory. Each carload contains about 400 sets of tires so that during the months of January, February and April, when the factory production was around eleven hundred cars dal
ly, approximately three carloads of tires were required for each day's production.
With 400 sets of tires to a freight car it will require approximately 781 cars, or a train approximately five
and one half miles long to bring the year's tire supply to the Ford, factory.
