BY LEA8ED WIRE MEXICO CITY, May JU-Formal demand was made on the Mexican government by Senor Cardoso de Olivlera, the Brazilian minister, at 2 o'clock this morning that a fair trial be granted Dr. Ed-ward Ryan, the American phy

sician, reported to have been arrested at Zacateeas and sentenced to death as a spy. The Brazilian envoy acted promptly after receiving . a dispatch sent by the Spanish ambassador at Washington at the request of the American state department, which told of the rumors that had readied ' Washington. ' v Senor De Olivera hastened to the ministry of foreign relations and then to the residence of Portillo y Rojas, the foreign minister, whom he acquainted with the situation, and warned htm that any lack of justice In the matter would result In serious complications. Senor Portillo is said to have told the Brazilian minister that he would investigate at once. Report Surprise' Friends. The report from Washington that Dr. Ryan was in a serious predicament was a great surprise to his friends here, and was not generally credited, as telegraphic communication with Zacateeas has been cut off for BeveraT days. They said that Dr. Ryan bad always been liked by the Mexicans among whom he has worked for several years. The last twenty-four hours have been marked by many ' diplomatic steps taken to further the efforts to affect peace in Mexico through mediation. The entire diplomatic corps, headed by Senor De Cologan, the Spanish minister, visited the ministry of foreign relations late yesterday, and of

fered its ' service to Senor Portillo to further the welfare of the country through -mediation.- - All the envoys were cordially thanked by the foreign minister. Last night envoys of the European nations and Latin-American countries held a long conference: At this Victor Ayguesparsse.' the " French charge d' -affaires, announced that he had been instructed by his government to assist' in the plans for mediation. Transfer U. 8. Archive. - The archives of the American embassy were formally transferred today from the English legation to that of Brazil, which now represents American Interests here. "The Mexican government has given a pledge to protect Americans if they stay here., said Minister De Olivera today, "and to facilitate their departure If they wish to leave.
