Frank Duning FANS GROW FRANTIC AS LID COMES OFF Thousands Yell Themselves Hoarse At Opening Games Between Teams of Organized Baseballdom. YANKEES LOOK GOOD Strengthened by Addition of Evers, Boston Braves Pre sent Strongest Lineup Club's History. in BY FRANK G. MENKE. NEW YORK, April 14. While something like 175,000 fanatics alternately ate peanuts and shouted their greetings, tne major league clubs of organized baseball lifted the cover from the 1914 season and began the business of cavorting on the various greens in regular fashion. It was a gala day for baseball and also for the fans. Fandom showed how eager it was to get a glimpse of the big leaguers in their opening battles of the season by fighting among themselves hours before the game started for choice seats from which to watch the doings of the athletes. A capacity crowd at each of the parks was indicated by the early sale of tickets, and in some cities it seemed certain long before the game began that many of the late coming fans would be turned away because of lack of room for their aocommodation. Opening Games. In the National league the Giants were billed to open at Philadelphia, the Boston Braves displayed their wares in Brooklyn, the Pirates were to meet in a head-on collision with the Cardinals in the Missouri city, and the Cubs tackled Charley Herzog's Reds in the Redleg town. The world champion Athletics opened with the Yankees ax the Polo grounds, the Senators grappled with the Red Sox in the Hub city, the Naps were billed to open with the White Sox in Chicago and the Browns and Tigers were scheduled to settle their first argument of the season in the Michigan City. There was considerable speculation as to the outcome of the Glant-Phillie battle. The two were bitter enemies last year, and seemed for time about evenly matched. But this year the Phillies, raided by the Feds, have sent into action a line-up that seemed somewhat strange to the fans, and which on paper seemed weaker than last year's combination. But Charley Dooin, the red headed manager, has come to the fore with the remark, that "despite fche loss of several of our best men we are as strong as we were last year, and we'll furnish a few surprises." Line-up Shows Change. The Yankee iine-up for the opening game this year and the 1913 opener was Just about as different as day and night. Only one man outside a catcher and three pitchers remains of the 1913 Yankee team, and Chance was confident that it would prove a stumbling block to the Philadelphia boys, whose victories over the Yankees last year greatly aided them-in their fight for the pennant. The Boston Braves, looked upon as the dark horses in the National league battle, sized up today as one of the best aggregations that ever fought under the Braves' banner The addition of the peppery Evers has added about twenty per cent to the strength of the team, and with the pitching staff in good shape, it looked today as if the Braves would "blow" themselves to a nice little stnrt and that they would furnish trouble all the way. The Senators looked mighty good when they lined up for battle today. With Johnson still in hii old form, with two of Griffith's young twirlers giving promise of being able to help out the Speed King, and with the outfield and Infield intact, the boys from Washington look like formidable foes. The Naps didn't look overly husky today when they prepared for their first clash of the season. Of course, the slugging pair, Jackson and Lajoie, were among those present, and with batting orbs undimmed, but the loss of Falkenberg, the Napr' pitching mainstay last season, and the fact that Chapman, the shortstop, who broke an ankle some weeks ago, won't be able to get into the game for another month, seemed to take away about twenty per cent of the club's normal strength. THOUSANDS OF FANS. SEE m OPENER Baltimore Takes First Game of Season From Buffalo by Score of 3-2 on Home Lot.
BALTIMORE, April 14, The Fdeal League certainly made an auspicious start yesterday, when 30,000 fans turned oat to see the opening game between Baltimore and Buffalo. Baltimore took the game, 3-2. Not since the days that the Baltimore Orioles captured a trio of pennants in a row has such a turn-out of fans occurred in this city. When the gates were opened at 11 o'clock, four hours- before the game began, there were 5,000 fans in waiting and it is estimated that there were something like 30,000 bugs on the ground when Mayor Preston threw the first ball. Though there were numerous errors on the part of both sides the game abounded in brilliant work. Jack Quinn pitched good ball for the locals and with tight support probably would have shut out the visitors. Moore started on the mound for the Buffalo outfit, but Knabe's men got to him in the fourth frame and he retired in favor of Krapp, who finished the game in good shape. Score: Baltimore 3 7 5 Buffalo 2 5 3 Batteries Quinn and Jacklltch ; Moore, Krapp and Blair. T HOW THEY RANK FEDERAL LEAGUE. Thin People Can Increase Weight Thin men and women who would like to increase their weight with 10 or 15 pounds of healthy "stay there" fat should try eating a little Sargol with their meals for awhile and note results. Here is a good test worth trying. First weigh yourself and measure yourself. Then take Sargol one tablet with every meal for two weeks. Then weigh and measure yourself again. It isn't a question of how you look or feel, or ... what your friends say or think. The scales and the tape measure will tell their own story, and most any thin man or woman can easily add from five to eight pounds in the first fourteen days by following this, simple direction. And best of ail, the new flesh stays put. Sargol does not of itself make fat, but mixing with your food,' it turns the fats , sugars and starches of what you have eaten, into rich, ripe fatproducing nourishment for the tissues and blood prepares it in an easily assimilated form which the blood can readily accept. All this nourishment now passes away from your body as waste. But Sargol stops the, waste and does it quickly and makes the fat producing contents of the very same meals you are eating now develop pounds and pounds of healthy flesh between ycur skin and bones. Sargol is safe, pleasant, efficient and inexpensive. Leo H. Fihe and other leading druggists in Richmond and vicinity sell it in large boxes forty tablets to a package on a guarantee of weight increase or money back. FIRE PROOF.

"PROFS" WITNESS FOUR-ACT FARCE High School Faculty Team Shows Little Resistance As Pupils Romp Round Bases For 12-5 Score. CARVEY GETS HOMER Whisnand Stops Teaching History Long Enough to Pull Off Thrilling Stunts Near Second Sack. . Varsity, 12; Faculty, 5. In a rattling 4-act comedy, staged at Che playground diamond yesterday afternoon, the high school varsity nine trimmed the. Faculty combination by a 12-5 score. The game was featured by a home run off the willow of Bob Carvey, of the varsity, and a brilliant bit of fielding by one particular R. O. Whisnand, whose regular occupation is expounding history io the high students, five days each week. Although the teachers put up a good game against their proteges, the youngsters had the game safe at all times and the ultimate result was never in doubt. The principal cause of the defeat of the "Profs." was the fact that they could not connect with the delivery of Hafner or Williams at opportune moments, while on the other hand, Nohr, of the faculty, was touched up for sixteen bingles in the five rounds played. Group Bingles. Bob Carvey opened up the program when on the third ball pitched he slammed the horsehide to deep center. "Abe" Fivel, not to be outdone by the generosity of his team mate, duplicated the trick and the deluge was at hand. "Cap" Hart stepped to the plate and performed his part of the play well by biffing the leather Into the left garden, to the immense delight of the undergrade of the school Before this session came to a close four varsity men had romped across the pan, giving the youngsters a lead which was never overcome. The Faculty bunch could do nothing in their part of the Initial stanza, being retired In one, two, three order. The regulars added another quartet of scores to their account on the score-sheet, in the second, Meranda, Grimes, Hafner, Porter, Carvey, Hart and Fivel doing the trick with five swats among them and several boots on the part of the "Profs" infield men. Carvey -pulled his act this session, lamming one into the corn field adjoining Athletic 'park and making the circuit with lots of time to spare. The remaining innings saw the conDDDDDQI

LOCAL FIGHT FANS SEEJINCY BOUT Britton Easily Outclasses the Ohio Boxer Showing Good Work Throughout.
Many local fight fans witnessed the alleged go between Jack Britton and Billy Griffith, at Cincinnati last night. Britton clearly outclassed his oppon - ent from the first tap of the gong and had the Buckeye pug at his mercy throughout the- fight. Local sports were surprised at the ease In which the Chicago man handled the Clncy boxer, who has the reputation of being the best welter In these parts. Griffith was all but helpless during the final rounds and only the gong saved him from a knockout in the final frame. Britton oame out of the fray without a mark but his opponent was badly massed up about the head and face, due to the slashing attack. For clean-cut boxing, cool-headed-ness and scientific footwork Britton had anything beat, ever seen in Cin1 ; olnnatl, according to local fans, who 1 wiinessea tne doui. u was just sim2 ply a case of Britton being too fast 0 ; for the Cincinnati man.
