SUFFRAGETS APPEAL ! TO HOUSE COMMITTEE Leaders Press Home Claim for Recognition of Cause Before Congress. WASHINGTON, April 6. After a setback In the senate, followed by In
activity on the part of the house commfttet on judiciary, the woman suffrage advocates have begun ' to besiege another congressional body the house committee on election of president, vice president and representatives In congress. , - . ' The suffragists, failing to get a whole loaf, now are asking the latter committee to give them half a loaf, and the troubles of the responsible Democratic majority over the suffrage Issue are Increasing. The feminine pleaders, checked temporarily In their plan for a constitutional amendment for woman suffrage, are insistent that congress shall at least give women the right to vote in elections where senators and house members are to be named. v Senate Held Aloof, it was a discouraging blow when the senate went back on "the cause" and failed to muster the necessary twothirds majority to submit to, the people of the various states a constitu-
right to vote. While the senate was debating such a resolution, the women were before the house judiciary committee seeking a report on a similar resolution in the lower body. The house hearings were held early in March, but the committee has so far failed to report in favor of the suffragists, , and the prospects are that there will be no report. Year after year, the suffragists say, they have been appearing before the Judiciary committee and each time the "mere men" of the committee have turned the deaf ear. In "all, the suffragists have made four valiant attempts during this session to get action. On each occasion the anti-suffragists have been on hand stubbornly fighting their suffrage-craving sisters and declaring that the ma-
JUI llj ui w uuivii utiuuanuuv v i -vsuu try does not want the bollot. So far, congress has appeared to take at its face value the latter statement, not unmixed with certain reasoning that suffrage is a state matter, and that the - federal government should keep hands off.

George H. , Knollenberg delivered the following address at the memorial service held for Dr. J. J. Young at St Paul's church last night: The death of Rev. Toung, in memory of whom we are assembled this evening, has brought to my mind the scripture passage written in Zachariah first chapter and ftfth verse, which he used as the basis of his remarks at the funeral of one of our faithful members more than twenty years ago. It was a fitting text because on this particular occasion he brought to mind so vividly the departure of a number of the fathers of the neighborhood, showing the changes which were worked by the scythe in the hands of the angel of death, and how the responsibilities of life were being transferred to another generation. -Likewise we can say (for our church at large, 'Your (our) fathers where are they?"' Within the memory of many "present here tonight, many- faithful fathers of the church could be brought to memory whom we knew personally or through the service rendered in important fields of activity to keep alive the faith of the fathers and the church in which we delight. Mentions Other Leaders. I will mention the names of some contemporary with our departed father and friend, Dr. Young. Rev. Samuel Barnitz, that faithful servant of the church in the work of home mis
sions. Drs. Ort and Breckenridge, of
Wittenberg College and Seminary, likewise Dr. J. H. W. Stuckenberg, once president of Wittenberg college. The sainted Dr. Spreacher, Rev. Charles Alberts, who so ably edited the Augsburg Teacher, and called to his reward so early in life. Dr. Hamma
who so richly endowed Wittenberg
college. Also others In tne east not
so well known to us, but known to our departed Dr. Young and associated with him in the work of the Master's Kingdom on earth. But I wish
still to apply this text, "Your fathers, where are they?" more nearly to our
own church and pastors who served us.
During these sixty years of existence of St. Paul's church, I have personally known all but the first pastor. With but a few exceptions (and whose period of service in each instance was of short duration) this congregation has been blessed with faithful pastors. Pastors or teachers can also be rightfully called father, for when that filial respect and affection exists between pastor and people he can become to his people even as a father.
I And owing to the very gentle nature
OI mm voom we revere wnu iuio isevice tonight, he was not infrequently called by many Papa Young. Of the fathers pastors of this church (known especially to the living) who have passed to their reward, I might men
tion Dr. Severinghans and now Dr. Toung. Influence Persists., What their Influence for good was to this people makes them both truly fathers whose memories cannot be' measured in words their works do follow after. Those who by their loy
alty to the church and Christian life
have honored the memory of these, exemplary teachera have already honor
ed them more than any token of love
an esteem we can now bestow by
word, act or symbol. Tonight there are many present here who had his
gentle, gracious ministry and Instruc
tion. It Is proper-and fitting to be
here to revere and honor his memory
and shed the sympathizing tear. It is also proper as Abraham Lin
coin said in his brief yet beautiful tribute to the dead at Gettysburg, let us rather dedicate our lives anew to
our country, for more we cannot do, and so -we to our church and the instruction of our fathers our pastors. In a letter received from him dated March 13, he says, "We are all well, think God." His end came suddenly, his work was done for the Lord knows. Our sympathy and love to the bereaved' family has been shown by other tokens. Let us tonight renew the hope that where our fathers are who have gone before we in God's own good time shall also be.

For the first time in history, the United States senators gave a majority vote last week in favor of the. nation-wide equal suffrage amendment. Very few of the senators expressed objection to woman suffrage in principle, and not one denied ..that it was sure to come. ' In statesmanship the unpardonable sin is failure to bow to the inevitable when you are face to face with it. That is what Is malting all the trouble in England. American politicians usually are quicker sighted, or less stiffnecked. As the father in the parable of the Prodigal Son, while it is yet a long way off, they run to meet it, and fall upon its neck. Chief Justice Clark, of North Caro
lina, says: "As a matter of policy I do not believe it wise to antagonize an element "which in a few years is destined, beyond all controversy and all opposition to become one-half of the electorate. ' Prof. Hart, of Harvard, says: "I am an advocate of equal suffrage because I can't help it. Observation in pqual suffrage states has knocked the bottom out of my arguments against It." . Rhode Island has broken its Ions precedent by permitting a woman to address the senate. Eight woman deputy tax assessors have been appointed in Chicago. The tendency is growing more marked in all states to select women in caring for the public schools. It is Rtated that there were 495 women superintendents of schools in 1912. Police women are no longer a novelty. San Francisco has three on the police force, Los Angeles two, St. Paul two, Topeka has two police women, Sapula has a patrol woman whose special charge is juveniles under sixteen who are on the streets after 8 p. m. Dr. Anna Shaw addressed 2,000 Yale men and Connecticut suffragists at New Haven last week. She will sail for Italy on April 16. She will speak on woman suffrage in Rome on May 4 at the meeting of the International Council of Women. franklin county, Ohio, saloon keepers will be asked to pay $1,000 monthly to be used by the state liquor dealers' organization to fight woman suffrage as well as state wide prohibition.

A MEDICINE OF MERIT A proprietary medicine, like everything else that comes before the public, has to prove its merits. The law of the survival of the fittest applies in this field as in others. The reason for the tremendous success of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound is because it has been fulfilling a real human need for forty years, so that today thousands of American women owe their health and happiness to the marvelous power of this famous medicine, made from roots and herbs nature's remedy for woman's ills. If 'you have any skin trouble, you want Resinol. You want it because you have known about it for years, because your friends and neighbors have used it successfully, and because you know that physicians have prescribed it for nineteen years in the treatment of eczema, rashes, ringworm, pimples and other distressing eruptions. You do not want a "substitute" or something that a dealer tells you is "just as good as Resinol." You do not want it because you know nothing of its value. It has nobody's endorsement and for all you can tell it never did anyone any good at all.
