WHAT VViLL CINCY DO, FAHSH0W ASK Spring Training Is Far From Satisfactory to Manager Herzog.

CINCINNATI, O., April 3. Just .tvhat position the Cincinnati Reds -will occupy in the National league standing next fall when the last ball has been pitched and the start of the national game think of their winter occupations, is a question that is puzzling CIncy bugs. The showing made so far by the team in its spring training games is far from satisfying. The Reds, under

xnedocre article of ball so far this spring, accepting beatings most every day. Just yesterday the Louisville Colonels walloped the Red outfit in a farcical exhibition of the game that resulted in a 5 to 2 count in favor of the Blue Grass bunch. Herzog thinks his men have a jinx n their trail. Injuries, sickness and poor weather have gone far to prevent the Buckeyes from rounding into any semblance of form. Three Reds were added to the hospital list just yesterday. Heine Groh is suffering from an Attack of the grip; Marsans has a .wrenched ligament in his shoulder that will keep him out of the game for some time, and Doc Miller has a bad leg that hinders him from engaging in regular work. The Reds' pitching staff is not anything to shout abou. True, Yingling should do big things for the Ohio bunch, but so far this season the former Brooklyn star has not hit his pace. The Louisville Colonels pounded him hard yesterday and he had to retire in favor of Lear, who shot them across in a manner that discouraged further activities of the Kentucky swat artists. Benton and Johnson are the other mainstays in the flinging line. . The infield and outfield looks fairly Rood. Hoblitzel is sure of holding down his end of the game at the initial sack, while Groh and Herzog will be seen in the space surrounding the second station. Niehoff looks like the most likely candidate for the third sack. The pastures will more than likely be in the custody of Bates, Marsans, Moran and Miller. Other candidates and recruits from the bushes that look promising are Blackburn, Porter, Kellogg and Berghammer.

THIRD SUCKER FAILS TO SIGHOIITRACT Curley Re-Affirms Decision Not to Sign With Quaker Outfit This Season.

The only problem tbat confronts Manager Kenney of the Richmond nine, la the lack of a third sacker. Curley, the fast W. Covington malk, who was counted on to fill this position has affirmed his previous statement that he would play with the MaVSVille. Kv.. team this unrinp This

Jeaves a big hole in the Quaker In-

neia mat win nave to be filled before the opening of the season April 26. With the exception of Curley, the infield Is intact. Perkins, the giant first baseman will be seen here in a Quaker uniform and much can be expected of him. Cushing, who was seen here last season with the Covington nine, will fill the territory around the keystone sack. Short stop will be in custody of one particular Sheppard, also of the Covington team. With a good man at third, this lineup should be the best ever presented by a local club. This Is the same lineup that faced last year's Quaker team twice, when the locals received two drubbings at the hands of the Covington team. It was impossible for the Richmond team to do anything with these men last year and this crew working with a battery like Sauters and Novack should do big things for Richmond this year.
