TAX RUSH STARTS WITHINjEW DAYS Treasurer- Says Only one Month Remains in Which to Make Settlements.
The semi-annual tax rush will begin in a few days as only a month remains until the final day to make payment of spring taxes, it was announced by Treasurer Chamness today. For that reason, a warning was issued to those who want tax statements, that they will be given out for only a few dayB more, after which the office force will be too busy to issue the statements. There are now few delinquent taxpayers on personal property among those who have ever been connected in a remunerative way with the county or city, either by steady employment or for a few days. The county treasurer has strictly enforced the law that pay checks shall be held up for delinquent taxes, and this has resulted in the collection , of many small delinquencies. There are still more than 7,000 delinquent taxpayers in Wayne county, about 7,000 of whom are delinquent on personal property. The delinquencies on real estate usually indicates such land is of little value, often not as much as the amount of tax charged against it. A few changes have been made in the the arrangement of windows and counters in the treasurer's office to make the collections during the real rush with more speed and efficiency. MAY PAYJEPOSITORS Friends of Siegel and Vogei Make Offer. NEW YORK, April 1. That Chicago packing interests and friends of Henry Siegel and -Frank E. Vogel would advance $1,450,000 to pay the depositors of the defunct Siegel bank in full providing criminal prosecution of the men were dropped, was the intimation made today at the examination of Vogel before Commissioner Gilchrist. It came from Levy Mayer, a prominent Chicago lawyer who is counsel for the packers. Mr. Mayer attended the examination as counsel for Mrs. Vogel, who Is a daughter of the late Nelson Morris. Judge Rosalsky today granted Siegel and Vogel one more week in which to plead to indictments brought agaiust them and Federal Judge Hough ordered the custodian of a 116,000 check representing parts of the deposits of the Siegel bank to show cause why this should not be distributed prorata among depositors. No fewer than 206 conventions have already been booked to meet in San Francisco in 1915 during the progres of exposition. Make This Pleasant Cough and Cold Remedy Yourself Here's the recipe: Into a pitcher put a tablespoonful of butter, one-quarter cup light brown sugar, an ounce of fresh, whole allspice and a pint of Duffy's pure malt whiskey. Let it stand for half an hour, then add one-half pint boiling water. Let it stand again for a short while, and before serving stir well and add the juice of one orange and one lemon. This is to be served in a wine glass. It is very wholesome, appetizing and strengthening, especially for fever and chills in stormy and blustering weather. Prompt action on such occasions will ward off many a serious and oft-times fatal attack of bronchitis and pneumonia, as well as irriating coughs and colds. (AdvertlsemenO Office 700 Sheridan St.

No indication of a break in the deadlock between the bituminous coal operators and miners was apparent when the final conference began today. The miners leaders said they would refuse to yield to the ultimatum of the operators that the present wage scael must be accepted, the only alternative being a complete shut-down at midnight Thursday. Closing of the mines would thrown out of work 38,000 nuion miners and about the same number of non-union men. VILLA HOLDS
TORREOII CITY I Continued from Pag 1.) afternoon in a battle that caused terrific losses on both sides. The main plaza of Torreon has been the chief objective of , General Villa since he smashed the outer defenses of the city. The armistice which was agreed upon Sunday afternoon is said to have ended at 8 o'clock yesterday morning with the complete rejection by Villa of the terms of surrender offered by General Velasco. The battle was then renewed, this culminating, the Constitutionalists say, in the capture of the plaza. Though the Constitutionalist officers refused to discuss Villa's purpose in withholding news of the capture of Torreon, observers of Villas methods of warfare believe that he is holding back the news In order that he may execute the prisoners he has taken and loot the city without having to disregard any orders that Provisional President Carranza might send if he were notified that the Federal stronghold had been taken.
