"Gifford's Dream' of Railroad to Sell For Proverbial "Song"

Two Engines, Five Cars and Two Streaks of Rust, Known as Chicago & Wabash Valley, to be Sold.

INDIANAPOLIS, March 6 Railroad boys in Indianapolis always cracked a smile when it became known today that "Gifford's Dream," consisting of two engines, five cars and two streaks of rust known as the Chicago and Wabash Valley Railroad was about to pass out of existence as an Independent railroad system and become a part of the Monon railroad route. The prospective transfer was flashed into the limelight through an application of the representatives of the estate of the late Benjamin F. Gifford to dispose of the road for $95,000. This permission was asked of the Public Service Commission because in a very liberal interpretation of the term the Chicago and Wabash Valley

Prof. Budlong was Qi-ickly Relieved of Both afflictions by Using P.heuma. If yon suffer from any form of Rheumatism, remember that RHEUMA goes to work quickly to remove tht cause, not 6irop'.y to relieve the distress. Many years' use has demonatrafeil that U goes? to fhe seat of the disease and expeln the poisonous matter through the natural channels the kidneys, bowels. liver and skin. "For many years was troubled with Rheumatism, also with Bright's Disease of the Kidneys. I suffered awfully. Tried many advertised remedies. After using your truly remarkable preparation, RHETJMA, I was fully cured," Prof. C. J. Budlong, Sound View, Conn. RHBUMA is guaranteed by Leo H. Fib, who sells it for 50 cents a bottle Adv.

parallels the Monon. While the matter was under consideration a biggeroffer was telephoned down from Chicago by a syndicate that offered $105,000 for this unique system of steam transportation. Incidentally the fact was brought to light that the face value of the outstanding bonds and stock of the

Chicago and Wabash Valley railroad

j Is $572,000. ! The line covers a territory of about j forty miles, beginning at McCoysburg, in Jasper county, where it con- ! nects with the Monon and runs j northwest through Delia, Pleasant j Grove, Grape-Island and on to Din

widdle, just across the Lake county line. The regular schedule calls for two trains a week in each direction. Although the road has had remarkably few wrecks or other disasters, it has experienced financial vicissitudes at various times and for a long time it has existed as more or less of a Joke among the railroad fraternity.

! Benjamin F. Glfford, 'of Giffords I Station, who owned practically all the i land in that Immediate vicinity, built j and owned practically all the stock and bonds of the railroad, just enough j shares being distributed among the 1 rniilred nnmhpr of directors tn Hva

the system the proper legal standing. Was Cherished Hobby. Old Man Glfford cherished the hob by of eventually controlling a paying road across the Kankakee swamps, but operating expenses Invariably outstripped the revenues. Glfford disposed of thousands of acres of land holdings In order to meet payrolls and other expenses and finally died a year ago without realiz-j ing his fondest, wishes. Unlike the old "Blackberry route" the train crews never were known to chain down the passenger trains be

tween stations until their wages were , forthcoming, but it is related by train- ! men that paydays were not always on ! schedule time. Gifford's heirs are now willing to I take the proverbial "song" for the entire system, but the Public Service j Commission has a weighty problem on j its hands, due to the fact that the Chicago and Wabash Valley is technicalj ly a competitor of the Monon and I this militates against absorption by that road. It is said the Chicago syndicate may operate it. as an interurban line. Another snag on the horizon looms up in the shape of attorneys for a woman in Northern Indiana who alleges she is a child of Gifford and opposes the sale of the railroad.

GRAY HAIR BECOMES DARK, THICK, GLOSSY Try Grandmother's Old Favorite Recipe of Sage Tea and Sulphur. Almost everyone knows that Sage Tea and Sulphur, properly compounded, brings back the natural color and lustre to the hair when faded, streaked or gray; also ends dandruff, itching

scalp and stops falling hair. Years ago the only way to get this mixture was to make it at home, which is mussy and troublesome. Nowadays we simply ask at any drug store for "Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Hair Remedy." You will get a large bottle for about 50 cents. Everybody uses this old, famous recipe, because no one can possibly tell that you darkened your hair, as It does it so naturally and evenly. You dampen a sponge or soft brush with It and draw this through your hair, taking

one small strand at a time; by mornins the gray hair disappears, and after another application or two, your hair becomes beautifully dark, thick and glossy and you look years younger.
