CLUB CO-OPERATES WITH AGENT COBB FOR DRN CONTEST Rules for Contest to Compete for $175 in Prizes is Announced County Show to be Given.
To stimulate interest in scientific corn growing, the co-operative plan of the Richmond Commercial Club and County Agent Cobb was launched today, offering prizes amounting to $175 to be given in the Wayne County Corn Growing contest of the Commercial Club. Management of the contest, which will close at the end of the season, with a county corn show, was placed entirely in the hands of the county agent yesterday. In a few days circulars will be sent to all localities giving farmers the rules of the contest, the reasons for holding it and the requirements for entrance." The co-operation of the Commercial Club was secured last fall through the influence of Secretary Charles Jordan, who recommended the appropriation of $175 for Mr. Cobb to use for prize money in such a contest, the ' aim being to increase the corn yield of Wayne county, add to the farmers' profits and ultimately augment the business conditions of the eantire county. Wayne county's yield of corn is about 38 bushels to the acre, while the soil here is capable of- producing about 50 bushels if the corn is properly grown, Mr. Cobb stated. This Increase would mean an addition into the hands of the farmers of thousands of dollars a year, the additional average profit from each acre if the average yield were Increased to fifty bushels, would be no less than $50. "We are co-operating with the farmers and the agricultural agent here because we want to encourage more intensive corn growing," Mr. Jordan Bald today. We believe that contest ) will increase the standard of corn growing and will tend towards an ag-! ricultural uplift. The club will keep j in elose touch with the agricultural interests of the county because whatever benefits that interest, benefits the entire community." Mr. Jordan will write a short preface for the circulars which Agent Cobb will issue in which he will explain the attitude of the Commercial Club towards the farmers' interests, nnd tell why he advocated the appropriation of $175 for prizes. To advertise the contest more ex tensively Mr. Cobb will give a short .

GUNS TO BACK UP E E WASHINGTON, March 3. That a frank discussion of the Mexican situation will soon take place in the senate was indicated today as a result of speeches made by Senator Chamberlain. Democrat, and Senator Reed Smoot, Repqublican, before the Second Army Corps last night. We hear a great deal about universal peace and peace treaties," said Senator Chamberlain. "When this country feels that Its dignity has been trespassed upon, it is going to fight, no matter how many treaties there may be. "The United States stands at the gate of Mexico and says 'Hands off.' j By what right does she do this? By 1 the right of the Monroe doctrine. And I we find that other nations respect this doctrine. Soda For Gas, Acid Stomach or Indigestion Gas, Gas, Gas When everything eaten turns to gas and we eructate sour food and acrid fluids it means we are troubled with acidity, says a noted authority. An excess of hydrochloric acid in the stomach starts food fermentation and prevents complete digestion. Then our meals sour in the stomach like garbage sours in a can, forming gases which inflate the stomach like a toy balloon, causing a heavy, lumpy misery In the chest; we belch gas, have sour risings heartburn, flatulence, waterbrash and nausea. He tells us to put aside all digestive aids and instead get from any pharmacy a package of 10 grain Sodagen tablets and take one tablet any time followed by a tumbler of water which will instantly neutralize acidity; stop fermentation, absorb the gases and sweeten the entire digestive tract. He further states that those men and women troubled with chronic acidity and its resulting Indigestion, Sourness and Gases should take one- 10 grain Sodagen tablet regularly after meals for a period as this antacid is 'entirely harmless, being composed of Soda. Magnesia and Calcium Carbonlate, U. S. P.

SON AIDS GOTHAM III REMOVING SNOW New York City Fights Its Way Out of Worst Blizzard Since 1888.
STRIKES ENTIRE EAST Total Damage is Estimated at $10,000,000, While 50 Die From Cold. NEW YORK, March - 3. A bright sun and rising temperature gave aid to New York today In Its desperate efforts to break the icy shackles placed upon the Nation's metropolis by the worst blizzard since 1888 while reports trickling in over repaired but still crippled telegraph and 'phone showed that the death list as a result of the storm in states along the coast will reach fifty and may go much higher. The damage in the East as a result of the blizzard is expected to reach fully $10,000,000. The cost of snow removal in this city alone probably will be $2,000,000. Six ships are ashore -at various points on the Atlantic coast and many small craft were sunk in the ice. With the abatement of wind tugs put out from this port to search for a string of missing barges carrying 23 men which became lost in the blizzard off Fire Island. The chief aftermath of the blizzard in this city lay In the attempts to restore the streets and traffic to something like normal. Street Commissioner Featherstone employed a force of 7,000 men who at daybreak attacked the 14-inch layer of snow in the principal streets. Every available wagon was pressed into service but with all the agencies working under pressure it was believed that it will be a week before conditions are normal. If further snow falls in the meantime the plight of the city will be acute. Interurban traffic was quickly re1 lleved of congestion after the snow ceased falling but steam traffic on all sides of this city was still seriously crippled because of the wreckage upon the tracks. Thousands of men were I sent out b- the railroad companies to clear the tracks of fallen telegraph poles and to help clear away the drifts. I The Lakewood & Atlantic City ex-1 press was still snowed in near Redbank, N. J., this forenoon. But for the heroism of L. E. Stoddard, the famous polo player who risked his life in securing food, 100 persons on the train who became snowbound Sunday would have been much more serious today. A food and coal shortage threatens the city but the menace of a milk famine was averted by the action of the railroad companies in giving milk trains the right of way where it was possible for trains to run at all. CARD OF THANKS. As I will be absent from the city for some time, I take this means of thanking my friends and neighbors for their kind attention and assistance during the illness of my wife, and for their sympathy expressed in so manv ways after her death.
