GOVERNMENT PHONES TO BE ADVOCATED
Lewis Will Urge Action Next Session of Congress.
At
WASHINGTON, Feb. 4. Legislation tor government purchase of telephone lines In the United States, and their operation as part of the postal machinery, as proposed by Postmaster-General Burleson and Representative David J. Lewis, of Maryland, will not be pressed at this session of the congress. Its advocates are planning for an energetic fight in the next session. Steps will be taken to sound the senttment of the country. A campaign of information will be made. Representative Lewis, who has made an exhaustive study of the problem will deliver a number of speeches laying before the country the results and his conclusions from the investigation he has made. The speech Mr. Lewis made before the Republican Club of New York, yesterday, is a part of the campaign of publicity. Need Backing of Country. , The men who are behind the legislation believe they will be in better position to make a successful fight with sentiment "back home" aroused in favor of it. The publication of the detailed recommendations of PostmasterGeneral Burleson in favor of government ownership of lines of communication has stirred up the question again In Washington, and has caused congressmen to begin studying the proposition. Advocates of the Burleson-Lewis proposition believe the house is favorable to the legislation, but there exists considerable doubt in regard to the senate. It is realized that public sentiment must be aroused before the senate will get In line. Therefore, during the congressional campaign next fall, it is expected that there will be a good deal said on the stump about the government taking over the telephone Hues.

MISS ROSAMOND BOTSFORD. To force a real live Count to promise that he would never again propose marriage and to then rescue him from a crevasse into which he had fallen while climbing a peak in the Italian Alps, is the proud boast of Miss Rosamond Botsford, of San Francisco. She has just returned to her native country after an absence of six years, during -which time she has completely satisfied her passion for mountain climbing by scaling some of the most, precipitous peaks in the Alps range. Miss Botsford declares that the Count had pestered her to the verge of distraction by proposing to her every time they met, whether on the street, in the hotels or at the opera. He even went so far as to hire a guide and follow her on one of her climbing expeditions in the Alaps. It was then that the Count and his guide slid into a crevasse from which they could not escape without outside aid. Miss Botsford refused to allow her guide to help the pair until the Count gave his solemn promise to discontinue forcing his unwelcome attentions. Miss Botsford said that the Count lived up to his promise.

PLATT ISJCOUITTED Domestic Row Aired in the Circuit Court.
After being out for fifteen minutes! the jury in the appeal case of Harvey, Piatt, charged with assault and bat-; tery on his wife, Mrs. Pearl Piatt, re-j turned a verdict of acquittal in circuit '
court today. Immediately following the reading of the verdict, attorneys in the case prepared to try Piatt upon a similar charge preferred by his mother-in-law, Mrs. Charlotte Mitchell. It was believed, however, that it would not be necessary to secure another jury, as attorneys were attempting to have the charge dismissed. Airing of Piatt's troubles in circuit court today was the. aftermath of police court charges. Piatt was found guilty of both charges some time ago, but decided to appeal the cases to clear his name of the stigma, he said. It was charged that Piatt struck his wife while he and his son were walking on Main street, near Sixth, last summer, and that later in the same evening he hit his mother-in-law, when he passed her at Twelfth and North E streets. Mrs. Piatt has sued for divorce, and the case will be heard in the Marion circuit court at Indianapolis Saturday.
