CROWD SYMPATHIZES
WITH DONALD NESTOR Former Police Chief Relates Story of Stabbing of Richard Cook. Sympathy of spectators at the trial In circuit court of Donald Nestor, charged with stabbing fatally Richard Cook four months ago In a fit of anger, 6eems to be with the defendant. The indictment against Nestor, returned by the January term grand Jury, charges him with first degree murder. No witnesses were placed on the stand yesterday after the selection of the jury. The first important witness of today was former police chief, I. A. Gormon, who captured Nestor. Mr. Gormon related the story of his experience in the case. On October , the night of the stabbing, Cook came Into police headquarters, partially under the influence of liquor and with blood Btreaming down the side of his face. He talked incoherently saying that he had been hit with something. He said he knew his assailant, but could not remember his name and could not describe him. " Obtains Confession. The witness told of hie investigations after the soissors blades were found in Cook's head. Mr. Gormon found the handles of the scissors and traced back the ownership until he found who had last had them. Through this, he made the arrest of Nestor and through "third degree" methods, secured a confession of the stabbing from him October 23, while Cook was lying at the point of death. Dp. S. C Markley, who first treated the woond In Cook's head, testified that he saw no evidence of anything baying punctured the victim's brain and that had the brain been entered by the scissors points, at any of the enters on that side of the head, controlling the face, hands and legs. Cook would have shown it physically, whereas he spoke haltingly but coherently and was able to use his arms and legs. Dr. John C. Teetor, a physician at tie home town of Cook's parents. Pleasant Hill, O., treated the wound two day after the stabbing, he told the Jury when placed on the stand. It was during the testimony of Dr. Teetor that a skull, the property of Court Stenographer J. F. Holiday, was introduced. Dr. Teetor pointing out the exact position of the wound and the direction taken by the scissors. Worms The Cause of Your Child's Pains. ( Advprt!smentJ CITY MUST REMEDY SEWER CONDITIONS "Talk about open garbage cans and manure boxes being breeding places for flies, all you will, but the city has been tolerating the worst fly breedery in the city," declared President Bavls of the board of works today. He referred to the very unsanitary conditions existing on North Twelfth and Thirteenth streets, north of the railroad, in which neighborhood there is no sanitary sewer. Most unsatisfactory conditions were discovered in that locality yesterday when Mr. Bavis and Mr. McMinn of the board, made a survey of the proposed location for the Morton park sewer system. "Because there are no sewers on North Twelfth and Thirteenth streets it has been a common practice of the residents to dump dish water and other slops Into alleys and onto their premises, making that section most unsanitary and a favorite breeding place for flies," Mr. Bavls said. This locality will be tapped when the Morton park sewtr system is constructed. FAVORS RELIGIOUS SERVICED FARM Board of Commissioners to Appropriate for Expenses of Ministers.
County commissioners went on record today as favoring regular church services every two weeks at the Poor Farm and announced that they will appropriate enough money for tho coming year to pay the expense of having a Rlohmond minister and two singers there bi-weekly. This action was taken after severe criticism from the members of the Richmond Ministerial association when the commissioners, on the advance of the 1913 county attorney refused to re-emburse Superintendent Brumflel for the expense of holding the services. "We cannot legally refund the money which Mr. Brumflel paid out for the transportation of a minister and two singers every two weeks," Albert Anderson, commissioner from the eastern district said. "We will not allow the bi-weekly services to be discontinued because of an expense of ninety cents every two weeks. We have consulted Attorney Hoelscher as to appropriating enough for the year to pay the future expenses which are incurred in holding the services." Following a short meeting the commissioners went to the poor farm to arrange with Mr. Brumfiel some way of repaying him. The question of reimbursing the superintendent arose several months ago when he presented a claim for tho money and showed receipts from the ministers whose expenses he had paid. He was told at the time that he should present the receipts at least every month and the money he expended for religious services would be returned to him. The ministerial association then took action censuring the commissioners for not refunding the money expended for religious services. It was done with the belief that the commissioners were opposed to holding services or opposed to paying for the transportation of the ministers, while in reality the action was taken in accordance with the law and with the county attorney's opinion. The only" expenses each service are thirty cents round trip tickets for three persons. This amounts to less than $25 a year. ASKS DOCTORS TO PRESCRIBE RHEUMA Agent Greenburg Shows Faith in One Rheumatic Remedy After Six Years' Suffering. "3839 Cottage Grove Ave., Chicago, 111., March 17, 1913. For six years, on and off, just as the weather would change, I have suffered agony from Rheumatism, the pains in my big toe, left foot, knees, hips and groins being almost unbearable. At such times I hardly dared take a step for fear of another attack. I spent many dollars and became thoroughly disgusted with so-called Rheumatic remedies, until I tried RHEUMA. I was buying some liniment when your Peoria, 111. agents recommended your remedy. I have since asked physicians to prescribe RHEUMA for Rheumatism. The train crews on the Rock Island Railroad, who saw me limping along using a cane, will verify my statements. Yours most sincerely," J. K. Greenburg, News Agent, Rock Island Railroad. Anybody can afford to pay 50 cents to get rid of terrible Rheumatism, Sciatica, Gout, Lumbago, and that's all RHEUMA costs at Leo H. Fihe's, and he says if it does not do all that is claimed for it, money back. RHEUMA costs very little, but it Is one of the best remedies you can find to drive Rheumatic poisons from the system and bring back perfect health. TROTTER TO TELL OF MISSION WORK Richmond will have the opportunity of hearing from Mel Trotter at the tabernacle tonight some of the interesting experiences he has had in his seventeen years missionary work, during which time he has gained the title of the greatest mission worker in the world. "Just old time, common religion," Is what he uses, he says. Mr, Trotter arrived here today from St. Louis, having dedicated a $100,000 slums mission building there last night. He is staying at the Bailey residence on South Fifteenth street with the Honeywell party. Big, frank, experienced in the ways of the world, no one meeting and talking with him would know who he was or the distinction he has gained In his work, or as he stated today, would not know that he is an ordained "long faced" Presbyterian. Converted In Chicago. Mr. Trotter was converted in Chicago seventeen years ago at the Pacific Garden mission on Van Buren street where "Billy" Sunday was converted. He entered immediately into mission work and soon his mother and two brothers, Will and George, engaged in the work with him. There are forty-one missions scattered the length and breadth of the land under Mr. Trotter. Will Trotter is in charge of the Portland, Ore., mission while the other brother, George, is at Los Angeles. Mel Trotter gets results because he gives the people what they want, he says.
