give half time to that and the other half to the school medical examiners, we would still be inadequately supplied. Some day perhaps, when we have emerged from the barbarism and stupidity which now rules in city government and when the town can free itself from the tyranny of the state, we can have a health department efficiently and adequately organized to take care of all phases and lines of city health work. There will then be no need to cast suspicion on a department, but all can feel that the city administration is the agent

this for years and was able, finally, to pitch straight at any mark with unfailing accuracy. "Why do you waste to much time this way?" :. fellow farmer boy inquired. "Because a man can't throw curves until he has mastered the straight ball," was the reply. We submit that Sam Leever was a philosopher. He had grasped the fundamental truth that a curve is merely a variation from a straight line and that a man must master the straight ball before he can ever hope to master the curve. Are We a Cold People? Rev. Honeywell complains that Richmond people seem cold and are difficult to warm up to. After having been here three or four days he could recall only a dozen or two who had voluntarily approached him to make him feel welcome to the city. The evangelist is not alone in feeling this. Newcomers are often heard to remark that they have received a rather frigid reception. The town, as they express it. seems frozen over and all their efforts cannot avail to break the ice.

is impossible until one has mastered the essentials. They assert that if the pupil is kept faithfully at his task of throwing straight shoots in rrithmetic. English, history and other such basic studies, we might save two years between the ges of six and twelve and yet give the child a much better equipment of education. If this can be done it will be a great saving not only to the individual pupil, but to the state for it costs somewhere near forty dollars a year in taxes to pay the expenses per pupil of one year in school. Various committees have been working on this since 190:3; the present report is written by a number of the leading educational authorities in the country. They know what they are talking ;bout and they are unprejudiced. And they dedare that it. is easily possible to graduate a pupil ii-om the university at twenty-four. This would lie a saving at the present rate of from two to lour years. According to their findings the period of general education must be shortened to permit the

Then make him send it to your home on approval, keep it a few days, and then return it. In most cases it will be so badly soiled by that time he can't sell it to any one else. It is extremely Important that we work together along this line for by so doing we can put your home merchant into the hands of a receiver much sooner. 4. Do not make the error of regarding grip as an exaggerated cold. There is a big- difference between the two. Grip la ail epidemic disease that poisons the vital organs. -When a person has grip, the air passages are olive with millions of bacilli poisoningthe blood. The infected person feels tired and exhausted. It requires a good tonic laxative to keep the body of the patient as strongas possible to counteract the effect of the poisons created by the grip bacillus. An expectorant tonic with some laxative qualities is the safest remedy. Such is Peruna. lieware especially of coal tar powders or tablets because they lessen the vitality of the patient. There is no ppecifie for the grip. Peruna has been used with good success in former Krip epidemics. Indications point to the return of grip this -winter.

THE SPICE OF LIFE

inetitary education may be taught in six years j thing is certain we are made of that same hu

instead of eight. An earlier beginning in voca- man stuff which composes mankind elsewhere

lional work should be made for physiological leasons as well as for psychological. At adolescence the child needs a new range of interests to suit his new life. At present there is a great waste of time in cramming the student full of useless subject material. Information is a means 1o an end; if a child can think for himself on a matter he needs no great store of facts to think with. The members of the committee hold that we need a revolution in our ideal of culture. As it is culture is too academic, too ornamental; they would have it take off its coat and buckle down to the tasks of the present. The report lays special emphasis on the needs and value of vocational training. To these authorities education should be a preparation for l'fe and should best equip a man to fulfill tht' functions of the various relationships in which he finds himself. The findings of this committee and the cordial reception accorded their report by other educational leaders augurs well for the new day in education now dawning in which the old anarchy and aimlessness will give way to an education with a purpose which will see to it that every graduate knows how to throw straight ball.

The Visiting Nurse

The city's attention has been called to a friendly controversy between the Domestic Scinee Association and Professor Russel regarding ;r visiting nurse. The ladies have arranged to secure one and manage her efforts and support her privately; the professor argues that it would have been better had this work been done under the direction of the city health department. After viewing this question from all angles it seems to us the two sides have no possible cause for disagreement. For the most part it appears both are right. The ladies are right in insisting that the city has shown no disposition to undertake the work find is not now organized in such a fashion as to

be able to handle the matter with competency.;
