Domestic Life of Von Moltkes
Portrays High Sense of Duty
Characteristic of German Race
BY EDGAR ILIFF.
'be strongest trait in the Hie German people is their high sense of duty. as far back as the historian Tactitus note is made of this characteristic of the German race. The whole history of this wonderful people might be stated In two words. Germania-Duty.
Gociue taid: "Duty is the demand
of the passing hour," and the whole teaching of his "Wilhelm Meister" is "do the duty which lies nearest thee." In do other Germans has this high Urtue been better exemplified than in the great Field Marshal Helmuth Von Moltke and his good wife. Moltke had a imserable youth, according to his confession in his letter to Mary Burt, a young girl who was to be his wife. "Be persuaded, dear Mary," he wrote, "that kindness to every one Is the first rule of life and saves people whom you do not like without Insincerity or want of good faith. The natural friendlines of a kind heart Is true courtesy and the finest polish. In my case a bad bringing up and a youth of privations checked Its utterance, and so now I liave acquired coldness and haughty courtesy, which seldom attracts anyone." Leaves Home Early. At the age of 11 years Moltke left a home of privations and harshness ontl entered military service, arid regained a soldier up to his ninety-first year. By a faithful adherence to plain duties he became one of the world's greatest commanders. His rise was flow and plodding for a while, but at Jast came rapid. At every step he was fully prepared for the next. When the war between Germany and France came, In 1870, Moltke had h!s plans and details of army organl7ation so perfected that every guard, or company, or regiment, or battalion and corps moved as smoothly and accurately as the parts In the most exquisitely constructed machine. This faithful performance of former duties showed him now that the fall of Franca was the inevitable result of those duties performed. The very moment the German command of "Forward, march," was given the French Empire was doomed. He knew, and the German people knew that he knew. This certainty and precision were astonishing. There was not a brook, a lane, a mill, a bridge or farmhouse in all France that was not marked on his war maps. As early as 1859 he began a thorough organization of the Prussian army. France was defeated years before the Franco-Prussian war broke out. This great strategist could move his batallions as easily as he could chess men on the board. In his campaign against Denmark in 1866, the efficiency of the Prussian army made the whole of Europe sit up and take notice. A man of simple duty had risen to great power. Soldier la a Lover. Now, it is pleasant to see another fide of this soldier as revealed in his beautiful letters to the only woman he ever loved. This was Mary Burt of Ilolstein. When she and Moltke were betrothed he was a stern soldier, 41 years of age, and she a plain little German maid of 15. She was an unaffected girl, with a remarkable sweet classic face. She was unconscious of her personal charms. She disdained the arts of the toilet and was so fre-3 from vanity that it never entered her little head to wish for a new dress or an ornament of any kind. She was a3 pure and sweet and simple as Goethe's Margaret. When they were married he was 43 and she 17. It was a wonderfully happy marriage. The stern and tacituru man of war was all tenderness and simplicity in his love for her. See how the man of iron wrote to this beautiful, tender flower: "My little Mary, many years of oppression in which I grew up permanently injured my character, suppressed my true feelings and stifled all true and proper pride. Do help me from now on to improve myself. I dare say you have noticed that I am sometimes moody. Just leave me alone on these occasions. I shall come back to you. 1 will take pains to improve. Some one has said that there are only two kinds of marriages those In which the husband is under petticoat rule, the others are unhappy unions. I desire nothing better than to be at your mercy, and it will be your part to bring me to that point by your gentleness, compliance and kindness. I am sure that I shall often fall short of other men whom you will see. At every ball you will find some who dance and dress better than I, and at every party some whose conversation is brighter and who are better tempered than I." Prepares For Wife. But Mary the betrothed rapidly prepared herself or her position as a German housewife, in cooking, sewing and the management of household accounts. - She also studied English, French and Russian, and absorbed history and biography. She pledged herself, to duty as a fit companion for a strong man, and from the day when a sunbeam lighted her face as her father slaved ier band la thaX Mod-.
ke she followed the chosen path made radiant by a true love. And there her hand remained in confidence and trust, and was tenderly cherished for twentysix years. Frau VonMoltke was with her husband through the many tribulations of a rising army officer and was the light of his life, but she did not live to share in his greatest triumph when all the world paid tribute to his genius. On the red battle fields of France at the proclamation of Versailles, at the Congress of Berlin, amid the blaze and glory and the cheers and tears of the new-born German Empire, the "dear, good, sweet, pretty Mary" was to the great hero only a loving memory. In the throng of battle-scarred German veterans .among the tattered and torn flags in that great concourse of shouting lovers of country, the bronzed cheeks of the hero were furrowed with tears of love and memory, and the name of Mary was on his lips. There is a mausoleum in Silesia, on the green grass of a quiet country place, upon which is engraved in German letters, "Love is the fulfillment of the law." Never were words more fittingly chiseled into granite, for here rest forever the world's greatest followers of duty and .Germany's sweetest and grandest type of womanhood Helmuth VonMoltke and his faithful wife Mary.

oute. Pa. "They do the work and cause no unpleasant reaction." In cases of constipation when pills and saline cathartics are used, their use is often followed by constipation, as they take so much water out of the system. On the other hand, the effect of Chamberlain's Tablets is so agreeable and so natural that you do not realize that it
has been produced by a medicine, and i

There are but few among the new kirt models that do not show the bouffant hip. It is brought .about in everal ways by the tunfI jfteg-top drapery or the pannier, as- showm in 8059. In this instance a soft satin is used with trimming bands arranged to hold the drapery in place. Another feature which makes this 6kirt distinctive is the box-plaited lower section. A plain yoke may be substituted for the draped hip if preferred with equally smart results. "f sCj.8050 is one of those coat blouses which are so popular at the moment. They are most effective, especially when the material used is in decided contrast to the skirt. A softly colored
brocade or moire with a plain dark ! skirt is an attractive suggestion. In the illustration the coat is of copper !
colored poplin, and the skirt is black. To make 8050 in size 3S it require 2?i yards of 42 inch material. The skirt (8059) requires for size 24 S yards of 42 inch material. Long wa'.sted effects in children's fashions still hold first place. They are quaint and becoming. 8032 is fashioned of blue ratine belted in Roman stripes.
