William Naur, Grand Master of the Odd Fellows of Indiana; William II. Leedy, Grand Secretary; S. O. Sliarp, Grand Patriarch of the Encampment branch of the State, and Richard Hollywood, Past Grand Master, were speakers at last night's meeting in Odd Fellows' hall, which followed a conference in the afternoon of district deputies from a half dozen counties. Several hundred members of the fraternity were present to listen to the addresses by the State officers. At the afternoon session the plans for increasing membership were discussed and the district deputies made reports concerning the conditions in their respective counties. The new year promises to enow gains in every part of the state. Secretary Leedy who has been in poor, health for some time, but who has continued his activity in behalf of the organization, left for Atlantic city last night. He will remain in the east several weeks before returning to Indianapoli3. The other Grand Officers who were here went to Ft. Wayne last midnight where a conference with district deputies was held this afternoon.

their town was favored. Cambridge City argued that to run the canal south from Richmond, would give Richmond the advantage because the influx of trade and immigration would first stop here. Some broached a plan of running the canal south from CenterviUe, the county seat, and then branching both ways, to Richmond and Cambridge City. This plan was opposed because CenterviUe was not in a position to subscribe the amount of stock demanded for such a concession. While this controversy was going on the state legislature settled the matter by passing the International improvement hill at its 1838 session, providing for state aid in the construction of a canal from Hagerstown, through Cambridge City and Brookville tto Harrison where an Ohio company would continue it into Cincinnati.
