After the county seat was moved from Salisbury to CentervlUe, things so shaped themselves tbat no one but a bonafide resident of CentervlUe eould come any where near being elected to county office. Each election years Centerville "would have candidates for every available office, and despite indignant protests of would-be office holders and many of the voters residing in other sections of the county, would seat them in ofliee by a triumphant majority. Made Determined Fight. Finally in 1S37 residents of Richmond rose in indignation and made a determined fight to place some residents of this section In county office. After a bitter contest they succeeded In getting a Richmond man elected to every office to be filled. John Finley, the poet, father of Mrs. Sarah Wrigley, 42 South Fourteenth street, ran the lowest on his ticket, receiving a plurality of just one vote over Sam Hanna, the Centerville candidate for clerk, who had held the office twenty years. ATTACKS ENTRANCE OF BOMB THROWERS Immigration Bill Excludes Militant Suffragets From United States.
WASHINGTON. Dee. 13. Absolute xclusion of militant suffragette believers In sabotage and all members of revolutionary societies in Russia and other foreign countries is provided under an amendment secretly adopted by the house immigration committee to the pending immigration hill. When the adoption of this amendment became known here it caused the utmost surprise. Its acceptance by Congress would prevent the United States becoming a haven for political refugees. The amendment debars from the United States all persons believing' in the destruction of property or belonging to revolutionary organizations. It is the most sweeping amendment ever proposed by a committee of either house. This attempt to abolish the traditional "right of asylum" for political radicals is expected to arouse instant protest throughout the country. When the immigration bill w.s before the senate last year Senator LaFollette attacked Senator Root for having placed In the bill u provision which might exclude revolutionists.
