MKXTCO CITY, Dec. 11.--Scores of federal soldiers upon whom General liuerta had relied to keep his capital out of the hands of the Zapatistas are deserting daily and joining the rebels. Some of the most, trusted men of the Mexico City and Zuerhavaca garrisons have decamped with large quantities of ammunition. Desperate fighting is still going on south of Cuernavaca. This is the fourth day or the battle there. The Federals under General Castro have thus far held their own, but a large rebel force, led by the bandit Neri is marching for Pueblo to aid Zapata. The action of the soldiers here is causing general unrest. They obtain liquor whenever they desire. Many of those sent south last night to light the rebels were plainly drunk.

The Mexican stamp bears the coat of arms of the country, an eagle on a cactus, holding a serpent in its talons. This device is the outgrowth of a legend that the first Aztec settlers chose the site of their city from seeing an eagle so engaged, and situated at that spot.

The Effects of Opiates. THAT INFANTS are peculiarly susceptible to opium and its various preparations, all of which: are narcotic, is well known. Even in the smallest doses, if continued, these opiates cause changes in the functions and growth of the cells which are likely to become permanent, causing imbeciiity, mental perversion, a craving for alcohol or narcotics in later life. Nervous diseases such as intractable nervous dyspepsia and lack of staying powers are a result of dosing with opiates or narcotics to keep children quiet in their infancy. The rule among physicians is that children should ner receive opiates in the smallest doses for more than a day at a time, and only then if unavoidable. The "dmiiiistratien of Anodynes, Drops, Cordials, Soothing Syrups and other narcotics to children by any but a physician cannot be too strongly decried, and the druggist should not be party to it. Children who are ill need the attention of a physician, and it is nothing less than a crime to dose them willfully with narcotics.
