MEMORIAL
Father Cronin Delivers Address and Wilfred Jessup Pronounces Eulogy.
Very impressive were the annual nemorial services of the Richmond lodge No. 649, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, at the club assembly room yesterday afternoon. DespUe inclement weather the attendance apparently was not affected KB the assembly hall was well filled. The eulogy was pronounced by Wilfred Jessup and the memorial address
was delivered by Father Cronin, of the St. Mary's church. Music was supplied by a quartet composed of Mrs. F. W. Krueger, soprano, Mrs. Ray Longnecker, contralto, O. C. Krone, tenor, and F. I. Braffet, bass. Mrs. Fred Miller was accompanist. In his address Father Cronin declared that the soul never dies and that this belief is a primal instinct of the human heart, and that all cling to the hope of life beyond the grave. Organized 14 Years.
f "The lodge of 649 was organized
about fourteen years ago and since that time twenty-two of our brothers
l have left us," said Wilfred Jessup. j Brother John M. Palmer and Brother j William S. Clendennin have left us ! within the past year. I was not particularly intimately acquainted with i either, and .so I asked others who knew them better than I what kind (of men they were. Of them both I received the same answer, that they were straight and honest. They were
of the true type of Elks, belonging to an order founded on friendship and
charity." ' "Heretofore the lodge has held its , memorial services in a public place jbut this year we have departed from; this custom and are holding the exi ercises in our assembly hall. I believe this is much better as the services do not take on such an aspect of a public demonstration and are i more significant. "It has been not our custom but our duty and our pleasure to gather here to commemorate trie memory of our departed brothers." Memorial Roll Call. ! The memorial roll call as read by Secretary J. P. Dillon, follows: ! Adolph Bartel. Webster Chandlee, George Ebersole, Walter S. Gayle, Charles L. Sherer. J. Fred Jay. Wil- ; liam W Grubbs, Bernhard H. Moori man, Dr. George H. Grant, Josiah W. Nicholson, Ellis Palmer, Charles H. j Land, D. P. Armer, Charles G. Kolp,
Walter W. Wilson, Harry S. Simmons. Lawrence D. Commons. Franklin Moore, Ed F. Dalbey, Wallace Knees. John M. Palmer and William S. Clendenin. The order of exercises observed was: Invocation Father W. J. Cronin Opening Memorial Service John C. Bayer, Exalted Ruler Quartet, "I Behold and Lo!".. Morris Eulogy Wilfred Jessup Solo, "Thy Will B Done" Bohr Mrs. Krueger Memorial Address Father Cronin Quartet, "He That Keepeth Israel" Brown Closing Exercises Memorial Ode Words and Music by Lee B Nusbaum Dedicated to Richmond Lodge, No. 649, B. P. O. E. This day brings sadness to each heart a feeling shared by all: We think of those who answer not, whene'er their names we call.
In memory we think of them, we see them as of yore; The noble, kind, the brave and true, who meet with us no more." Our brothers who have gone beyond. have laid their burdens down: Let us. like them, bring joy to all, and strive to win a crown. And in that day when trials come. and we are troubled sore. The good deeds they have done will prove, a blessing evermore. The vast unknown will homelike seem, our friends have one before: That we may meet them is our hope, when this life's journey's o'er. Their spirits now are with their God, upon the other shore. And so may we abide with Thee, our God for evermore. Benediction Father Cronin
