extension of car lInesconsidered Company Holds Plans in Abeyance Pending Action of City.

WANT LINE SOUTHEAST

If Improvements Are Demanded New Routes May Not Be Ordered.

Extension of the car lines of the city of Richmond is being given consideration by officials of the T. H., I. & E. Traction company at the present time. The matter has been held in abeyance pending the decision of the city regarding the improvement of West Main street next year. If this improvement is not made, the company will have an opportunity to extend its lines rather than pay its ehare of the improvement. An extension of th line on E street to Morton park seems practically assured, although officials of the company doubt the ability of this extension to pay a return on the investment. They say traffic on this extension will only last about three months in the year, and that it -will not be near

ly so heavy as many of the promoters of the project seem to expect. New Cars Needed. It will necessitate the addition of another car to the line, as one car will be unable to make a round trip on time to serve patrons on North E street. This will mean an additional operating expense to the company of close tq $10 a day. Local representatives of the company hope to see a line run on South Eighth street to D, east on I) to Twenty-second, thence north to Main. This would open a large and profitable territory serving a large number of people. Should the company become convinced that it will not be called upon to pay too much for improvements on other streets during the next few years, it is probable that the attention of the company's engineers will be directed to this line next summer. Suggest New Bridge. Although recognizing the value of the suggestion to the board of works by T. C. Hubbard regarding the improvement of Main street two squares east of the bridge, members of the board hardly think it Advisable to wait until the idea can be carried out to pave the street. Hubard's suggestion was that Main street from Second to Fouth should not be paved until a new bridge could be built, and the street carried at the level of the bridge, thus eliminating the C. & O. overhead c rossing and cutting down the Main street hill. President Kennepohl, of the board, said today it would be years before a new bridge would be Duilt, and that in the meantime Main street would have to be traveled, anc would have to be kept in passable condition. So far as the present board is concerned, plans for paving Main street will be continued as originally started a few weeks ago.
