SMITH'S MACHINE CRUSHES CRIMSON Purdue Backs Hammer Indiana Line For Gain After Gain OLIPHANT AGAIN STAR Bloomington Warriors Weaken in Last Half, Worn Out By Onslaughts. By HASSAL SULLIVAN. Staff Correspondent of The Palladium. KI.OOMIXGTOX. Intl., Nov. L4. FijL'htinK desperately until the fimil vhfntl sounded, the Indiana eleven vus crushed by Coach Smith's nia chine from I .uKayetfe, which hammered the Indiana line with a tireless resistless attack in the last half that enabled them to pile up a score of 4'2 to 7. Purdue's open formation and interference were a puzzle to the Crimson players, enabling Oliphanf, about whom every play was built, to break away time and apain for Iouk runs through a broken field. Fleming Tics Score. The cleanest sensational football evE'r seen on Jordan field was played Hiring the firr.t half. After fi min!fi)es of play Stinchlield received a ' l'ng forward pass from Oliphant and wient over for the first marker. A few miVijtes later Kreharf punted to oliphant who fumbled the ball behind his fcoal line. Horry Whitaker fell on the ball. Fleming kicked goal, tying the pcore. Murine: the remainder of the half the Crimson carried the ball into I'urdue territory, threatening" the black and gold goal several times. I'urdue counted again near the end of the second quarter. Play Open Football. In the last half the Crimson weak rned, worn out by the fierce onslaughts of the Purdue backs, arid allowed the Poilermakers to count four times. Poth teams played open football Purdue had little difficulty in hand ling Indiana's straight football but , were less successful in handling the forward pass, since the Crimson gained a total of 170 yards with if against 110 for the UoMevtnakers. Knockout Mars May Fighf Here Boxing Promoters Plan Some Good Bills for Winter. Knockout Mars, the featherweight, who floored Champion Johnny Ki 1 bane in the third round of a recent t-n round bout, will be brought to Richmond for a fistic encounter during the winter, if the efforts of boxing devotees to revive the sport in Richmond meet with financial success. A meeting will be called for some evening this week of a dozen or more lovers of the game who will be invited to each put up a small cash guarantee which will be used as a purse to be offered for some good fights during the holidays. For the tirst fight, John Curley, who fought a recent draw with Kmanuel Veierra will be matched with Patsey Mc.Mahon, if the necessary arrangements can be made. This seems probable as the managers of both have indicated a willingness to have them meet in this city. j The promoters of the boxing revival in this city believe there is no reason why high class exponents of the art could not be brought to Richmond during the winter. They say that if the local fans are pleased with the first offerings they will all turn out to see some more expensive lighter who will draw from Indianapolis, Dayton and other surrounding towns. QUAKERS COMPLETE SEASON BY DEFEAT DePauw Wins By Consistent Line Smashing, 26 to 0. DePAUW 26; EARLHAM 0. GRKEN't'ASTI. K . Ind., Nov. 2 4.--Inconsistent Hue smashing DePauw Saturday ran up a score of 2ti to 0 against. KatT.iam and demonstrated its right to an undisputed claim to the secondary championship of the state. No time d tiring the game were the visitors able to threaten the .Methodists goal while the DePauw warriors Kept the ball in Farlhatn territory the greater portion of the game. DePauw save for a tie iramo with Franklin finishes the season with a ( lean slate. On comparative scores the Methodists have Franklin so far outclassed that there is t;o dispute regarding DePauw's rightful claims to the secondary championship. During tfie first period DePauw was unable to score but swept Karlham of.' her feet in the second period, scoring four touchdowns and kicking two goals from Touchdown for a total of 2 Iints. t liouue was the star for Karlham. playing the same consistent came that has won him commendation it) every contest in which the Quakers have taken part this reason. FULLBACK BRICKLEY WINS FOR HARVARD Star Player Lifts Ball Over Goal Posts Five Times. ELI'S SONS LOSE 15 TO 5 Thousands Crowd Stadium and Cheer the Eastern Champions. CAMPRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 24. Har vard with Full Back Charles K. Brickley playing in the stellar role, established a new ephoc in Crimson gridiron history Saturday by defeating Vale, for the first Time in the Stadium, by the score of la to a. Although twenty points were scored by the two elevens, neither succeeded in carrying the ball across the other's goal line, and all the points were the direct or indirect result of kicking. Seven times Prickley drove the ball, spinning and turninc, over the heads of the Yale playi-rs, and so deadly was his accuracy with eye and toe. that five times the ball crossed The goal bar for Crimson points. Pour times Guernsey, Vale's field goal kicker, essayed to same feat, but only once did The leather spheroid cross Harvard's goal. HIGH SCHOOL TEAM TO PLAY MARION WEDNESDAY EYE. After a consultation with Physical Director Nohr. Principal Pickell of the Richmond hiuh s hool. has decided that tii" basketball game with the .Marion hiuh school will bo played Wednesday evening at that, place as scheduled. It was believed for a time that the injuries received by a number of players in an automobile accident while returning from the game at Winchester might make it necessary to cancel the game. Quint:, the substitute forward, whoso services have been especially valuable will not make the trip, ami he is still suffering from his di.-loeated shoulder. It is thought that Hart, who sustained a sprained wrist, will be able to bandage it so that he can play through the game. Robert M.iiiiner. the driver of the overturned- car, attended school today, with his entire face, except one eye, swathed in bandages.
