S TWO TEAMS WILL BE CRIPPLED High School Quintettes Use Some Scrubs on Thanksgiving. to Considerable doubt over the outcome of the games to he played on Thanksgiving evening between representative teams of the Y. M. C. A. and the high school are enrertained by Physical Director Nohr. After he had agreed to Bend two teams to take part in the benent on Thanksgiving, he learned that a number of his players have already made arrangements for (-pending the holiday and taking part in a basketball game is not one of them. The team plays the evening before at Marion, and part of the team will not return to Richmond until the following Monday. This leaves Director Nohr shorthanded when he attempts to send to teams to piay against the association quintets. As tickets have been printed, there seems nothing else to do hut go ahead with the games, so the high school will send two teams and taKe chances with the Y. M. C. A. boys. STEFFINS NAMES ALL-STAR ELEVEN Sport Writer Places Three Chicago and Purdue Players on Team. Football critics have already begun their selection of players to make up the all-star aggregation chosen from the teams of the Big Nine conference. A day ago Tom Steffins, one of the football critics o' the Chicago Tribune, officiated at a game in Muncie. When interviewed regarding the material for the big eleven of the conrerence, he gave the following list or men who would be chosen to fill positions on the honorary squad by the Windy City critic. The premier squad is as follows: Right End Solis, Minnesota. Right Tackle Butler, Wisconsin. Right Guard Glossip, Purdue. Center Des .Tardien, Chicago. Left Guard Harris, Chicago. Left Tackle Pratt, Purdue. Left End Graves, Illinois. Quarterback Gross, Iowa. Right Half Oliphant, Purdue. Left Half Norgen, Chicago. Fullback Shaughnessy, Minnesota. "Had not Davis, the Indiana university star tackle, been injured in the early part of the season and not being able to participate in many games, he wouid have been chosen rfght tackle over Butler, of Wisconsin," said Steffins. Purdue and Chicago universities are divided evenly over the number of representatives on the team. Oliphant, the blonde Boilermaker star, is mentioned for All-Western material, but he will be pitted against the nprinter halfback, Craig, of Michigan, in the selection. Bowlers of City to Play Thanksgiving Day. on Local bowlers are invited to participate in an all-day tournament to be held at the City alleys on Thanksgiving day. A number of interesting prizes will be hung up for players rolling high scores. Last year a similar event was held on Thanksgiving in which more than forty bowlers took part. TO PLAY LAST GAME Butler Meets Rose Poly Next Saturday. INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Nov. 19. Butler will play her last, game of football Saturday with Rose I'oly on Irwin field. The teams are very evenly matched, but the Baptists think they have the edge on the Engineers because they made a better showing against DePauw than the Rose Poly eleven did. HOLIDAY BOWLING TOURNEY PLANNED INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., November 19. Preparations are being matte for a big city bowling tournament to be held here during the holidays. There are at present four leagues in the city and efforts will be made to line tip a large number of additional players to contest for honors in five-men teams and doubles and singles. Age-Grade Shows City
Superintendent Giles Works Out Tabulated Statement Showing Ages of Pupils Little Time Lost in Repeating Work Course of Study Better Adapted to Girls. BY SUPERINTENDENT GILES. An age-grade census is a tabulated statement of the number of pupils of each age in each grade in school. Boys and girls are kept separate since. the census reveals different conditions due to sex. Those pupils are regarded as of normal age w'uo are six or seven years old in the first grade, seven or eight in the seconc grade, eight or nine in the third grade, etc. Pupils under seven in the second grade, under eight in the third grade, etc., are classed as under age. Pupils over seven in the first grade, over eight in the second grade, etc., are classed as over age. Such a census of the Richmond schools reveals several interesting facts. Table No. 1 shows in the first horizontal row the number of boys in each grade in the city schools. The second row of figures in this ta'ole gives the number of boys in each grade of normal age as defined above. This is followed by the number of over-age and under-age boys in each grade. The next following rows show the number of boys one year over age, two years over age, etc. The vertical column headed per cent shows that 73 per cent of the boys in the Richmond schools are of normal age, 21 per cent are over age and 6 per cent are under age. The total years lost by overage boys is 538, while the years gained la 104. The last vertical column gives the average figures for the "same facts in 319 cities of the United States as reported by the United States bureau of education. From this comparison we see that Richmond has a larger per cent of boys of normal age, a smaller per cent of over-age boys, and a larger per cent of under-age boys. Much less time is lost in repeating work in the Richmond schools than in the average city of the United States. This loss of time may be still further decreased and the gain may be increased by a better adaptation of the course of study, methods of instruction, grading, promotion, etc., to the normal child. Tf ble No. 2 gives the same facts for the girls that Table No. I gives for the boys. A comparison of these tables reveals some striking differences. A larger per cent of girls are of normal age and a correspondingly smaller per cent are over age. The girls gain 147 years to the boys 104, and lose only 3G2 to the boys 583. The course of study and instruction would seem THURSDAY DONATION DAY AT AGED E Secretary Issues Appeal For Contributions of Money and Food. Charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, Vohlney Miller, entered a plea of not guilty at his preliminary hearing in circuit court today. Miller was bound over from police court last week after he had shot at his wife, Ed Garthwaite and Jake Bronson on November 5. Jealousy was said to have been the cause of the shooting. Mrs. Miller is staying on Fort Wayne avenue. Garthwaite came to see her regarding some work which he wanted her to do for his mother. Miller entered the house and chased Garthwaite from it, shooting at him. He then turned on i Mrs. Miller and shot at her. After exchanging several shots without injuring any one, the police were called and the affair ended. Miller's trial has not. been set down by the judge but will be held soon. It ia radically seen from this table that about 175 boys aHd an equal number of girls enter the Richmond schools each year. Most of tnese remain in school until the fourteenth year, when the number begins to fail off, rather more rapidly for boys than for girls. Less than half the boys remain at sixteen, and slightly more than half of the girls. Using 175 as the number of boys and also of girls who enter school each year, the last row (horizontal) of Tables 1 and 2 shows the percentage of this entering group to be found in each grade in school. The large percentage is the first grade, 150 for the boys and 125 for the girls, means that the average chile requires nearly a year and a half to complete this grade. All of the entering group (100 per cent) complete the fiftn grade. A much larger percentage than usual remains to complete the high school in Richmond. The increase in percentage from the eighth to the ninth (first year SENDS ii NNER LIFE" U, S, MAIL Otoman Zar Adhurst Hanish to Face Most Serious Charge. CHICAGO, Nov. 19. Otoman Zar, Adhurst Hanish, high priest of the Sun-kissed Purple Robes, bridegroom of the Sun, Moon and Stars, self-appointed savior of the Universe, today planned his defense against the charge of violating one of the most exacting and most feared federal laws. He will go on trial before the federal court here tomorrow charged with sending his book of "Inner Life" and other literature which the government alleges is improper, through the U. S. malls. The attorneys for the Sun-priest today failed in their efforts to obtain a long postponement of the case. Federal Judge Mack ordered that the trial must begin tomorrow. The delay until tomorrow was granted by the court on the plea that five important witnesses are missing. They were named as Richard E. Hanisch, of Milwaukee, who claims that the Sun Chief who christened himself "Hanish" is his son: "Billy" Lindsay, boy student under Hanish, who is believed to have been secretly sent to Canada, Mrs. William Lindsay, the boy's mother, and one other boy and young woman whose names were kept secret. Postoffice Inspectors today were seeking these witnesses. Without their testimony, the government attorneys declared, the sensational charges against Hanish will be weakened. 12th Total. Per Cent. of high school) grade Is explained, by the fact that no correction has been made for non-resident pupils who pay tuition or who are transferred to the city. The percentages corrected for this item are shown in brackets. The smaller number of boys and girls in the eighth grade is due to the fact that many pupils complete the seventh and eighth grades in the Garfield school in one anu a half years. This statistical study of the Richmond public schools reveals the fact that while the conditions, so far as elimination and retardation are roncerned, are better here than in the average city of the United States, there is still room for improvement j along these lines. The factors, alj ready mentioned in part, that lead to I this improvement are more regular at- ; tendance of pupils, a neuer adapted course of study, better health conditions in the community, flexible promo tion and grading, better methods of instruction, smaller classes tn some of the elementary schools In fact, all of the conditions that make for more efficient teaching and learning.
