ATTEMPT TO WIPE OUT TUBERCULOSIS Red Cross Societies Outline General Plan For Sale of Christmas Seals.

Diligent work toward wiping out tuberculosis in Indiana is bfeing done throughout the state this year, the effort growing in magnitude and activity as the Christmas season comes on, when much of the money needed in the continuous campaign is rounded up through the sale of Red Cross Christmas Seals. There are nearly. 70 societies for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis in this state, all of them active in promoting the warfare against the white plague, and all of them will be very busy in pushing the eale of Christmas Seals this season At the head of all these organizations is the State Society, with headquartersters at 203 Public Savings Building, Indianapolis, which has general direction of the white plague crusade and the sale of Christmas Seals. All of the state organizations are banded in a naional association with headquarters at New York. Allied with the county and local anti-tubercular societies in the sale of Christmas seals is the Indiana Fed-

Doctors Said He Had Dropsy

Some time ago I had an attack of grippe which finally settled in my kidneyB and bladder. I doctored with the doctors and they claimed I had dropsy. I tried other remedies and got no relief from any of them. My condition was such that I was unable to work for about two months and the annoying symptoms caused me a great deal of trouble and pain. I was hardly able to turn over in bed. Seeing one of your Almanacs, I decided to give Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root a trial and after taking several bottles was able to resume my work again. I cannot say too much in praise of your Bwamp-Root as the results in my case were truly wonderful. Yours very truly, ROBERT BALLARD, Mansfield, Pa.Sworn and subscribed before me, this 7th day of May, 1912. RAY C. LONGBOTHUM, Notary Public

MANY FIRES OCCUR

NEAR

NOON

HOUR

Sparks From Chimneys Cause Many Blazes in Indiana.

The periods, eleven o'clock to twelve o'clock in the forenoon, and two o'clock to three o'clock in the aft

ernoon are those during which most j Indiana dwelling house fires occur, as j

shown by figures compiled at the office of the state fire marshal for the period May 15 to October 10. At these hours of the day practically every house-wife has a fire in her kitchen stove, and swingle roofs, hot from the rays of the sun. are most susceptible to flying sparks.

Within the period Bix o'clock in he morning to six o'clock in the evening, almost twice as many dwelling house fires are reported, as occur within the other twelve hours of the day. Since the figures compiled by the fire marshal consider only the summer months, however, this is probably explained by the fact that heating apparatus is very little used at night during that season. One of the moet noticeable facts from the fire marshal's analysis of fires by hours, is the steady increase in spark fires throughout the morning. From nine to ten o'clock there was a total of twenty fires reported. From ten to eleven o'clock the number rose to twenty-seven, while from eleven o'clock until noon, it increased to a total of fifty-five. Fires from defective flues show the same increase as that of spark fires. Due to the warmth of the sun as it beats down upon shingle roofs, the hour from two o'clock to three o'clock

in the afternoon is also charged with a large number of spark fires. As a result of his analysis of dwell-,

ing bouse fires by hours, tne state fire marshal again points to the particular dangers to Indiana property owners

from the shingle roof. Because of thej heat of the sun. the shingles become' very dry near the middle of the day'

and act like tinder to every passing spark. Once afire they burn rapidly, and spread to adjoining buildings be

fore firemen can manage to gain control, j The number of fires occuring in the various periods of the day, as compiled ( by the state fire marshal, are: j Between twelve and noon and j twflve midnight 920 . Between twelve midnight and j twelve noon, 697 ; Between six a. m. and six p. m... 1.090

Between six p. m. and six a. m... 527 Practically one-third of all the fires reported from twelve noon to twelve midnight, occur in the house from two o clock to six o'clock in the afternoon.

eration of Clubs, which has named a special committee to help organize the selling forces throughout the state, and the Indiana Nurses' Association is helping through a special committee to the same end. County superintendents of schools, Sunday school organizations, and many other kinds of public spirited associations and societies are joining in the effort to raise a great white plague fund through the sale of the bright little Seals. Much educational work against the white plague and for the sale of the seals has been done this year all over the state. Health authorities and other speakers have been discussing the prevention of tuberculosis at county fairs, Chautauquas and at other meetings. In a number of counties hospitals for the treatment of tubercular victims have been erected and others are under way. A more vigorous campaign for the sale of the seals will be waged this neason than ever and an active effort is being made to get them within the easy reach of the public in cities, towns and on the farms. The state headquarters now has its first supply of 4,000,000 seals and has begun the distribution to county and local selling agencies, while a second order has

fbeen placed for 4,000,000, to be held

until further demand develops in December. The Hales will open everywhere about November 28 and will continue until January 1.
