ALCOHOL IS DRUG
DECLARES TILDEN Former State Representative Says Saloon Has Financial Backing.
! EXILED DR. SUN TO RETURN TO CHINA
The distinction between the saloon and alcohol was the point brought out by Prof. Tilden of DePauw university who spoke yesterday at the First English Lutheran church. Prof. Tilden was a member of the state legislature a few years ago, and took a stand for county local option. He explained the difficulties encountered in securing legislation against liquor. "While I am only a layman in the anti-saloon movement and not an official of the league, I take a deep interest in the cause," said Prof. Tilden. "I Xs a member of the movement for mnty local option in the legislature and there I gained some idea of the powerful saloon force which fights against legislation. "Alcohol should be controlled as any other habit forming drug because it really is a habit forming drug. But it is never included in any drug controlling legislation because when a fight is made against alcohol, it is waging war against the saloon forces. "The means of control of the saloon through legislation is through alcohol recognized as a habit forming drug. Until that legislation can be secured, it will be hard to legislate against saloons because of the large money interests backing the saloons."
TOOK UNDERCLOTHING Needed Them, Perhaps, But Bound Over.
Because he called for a package that did not belong to him, William McGee will be charged In circuit court with petit larceny. The package contained some underclothing which John Lavin had left with the bartender at the John Sullivan saloon. Early Saturday evening Lavin asked the bartender's permission to leave the bundle back of the bar. Before Lavin returned the bartender left and Mr. Sullivan went on duty, not knowing to whom the package belonged. When William McGee demanded the package saying it was his, Sullivan handed it to him. When Lavin discovered his loss, McGee was arrested.
WOMAN ESCAPES FROM EASTHAVEN
Evading the attention of attendants Mrs. George , Smith ers, an Inmate of the Easthav en Indiana Asylum for the Insane, escaped' from the institution yesterday afternoon and walked a distance of more than thirty miles before she was detained this morning at Asb land, Ind, three miles east of New castle. .. . ) The manner of her departure from the institution is a mystery. Her absence was not discovered until 6 o'clock which gave her two, hours to evade pursuit. Mrs. Smithers is 60 years of age. While she is mentally ill, she is not considered violent and has never before given any trouble. She was placed in Easthaven three months ago, coming there from Ft. Wayne, where she has a sister residing. Dr. E. W. Jackson left this afternoon to return her to the institution.

(Top to bottom: Dr. Sun-Yat-Sen and Yuan-Shi-Kai.) In a recent interview in Tokio, whither he fled when it became apparent that he had been marked for death by the agents of Yuan-Shi-Kai, Dr. Sun Yat Sen, who was first Provisional President of the new Chinese Republic, declared that he was going back to Japan to overthrow the Yuan-Shi-Kai regime. He intimated that he was in constant communication with secret organizations in the Flowery Republic that were plotting to depose Yuan and expressed no doubt as to the prospective success of their plans. MARKS ON THE BAGGAGE.
They Tell Waiter Abroad the Kind f Man the Owner la. Much traveled persona who carefully examine their trunks will find thereon a number of cabalistic marks which they probably put down to the wear and tear imposed on the baggag. As a matter of fact, the signs come, not of chance. They are placed there by the waiters at the various hotels whereat the traveler has stayed and have a direct meaning. A sort of freemasonry exists among waiters at European hotels. They have a system of marking baggage so as to tell other waiters the manner of man that the traveler is as regards tipping. The traveler who arrives at a hotel with his baggage marked with a straight upright line on either side of the locks is sure of good attention, lie is classified as "very liberal." A horizontal straight mark in the upper right hand corner of a trunk means that the owner is no good at all. while if this mark is accompanied by a Y mark it signifies to the waiting fraternity that the traveler is the limitentirely hopeless. A cross mark on the lower right hand corner conveys the intelligence that the owner of the trunk is rather eccentric, but worth paying attention to. A diagonal mark in the lower left hand corner speaks of a person who la
eccentric without being liberal. Lon don Answers.
Rifled Firarms. In the South Kensington museum are several wheel look muskets with rifled barrels made during the reign of Charles I., if not earlier. Such barrels were then usually called "screwed." Zachary Grey in a note on "Hudibras."' part 1, canto 3. line 533, says that Prince Rupert showed bis skill as a marksman by hitting twice in succession the vane on SL Mary's Stafford at sixty yards with a "screwed" pistol.
