HUSBAND A CRIPPLE Helping Hand Extended By Matron Obtains Employment For Mother.
That the Home fer Friendless Women has done much good in extending support and shelter to unfortunate women and girls is eyidenoed by the story of Mrs. George Hamilton, who ; with her two small children was cared Itor at the Home for several days, her ftiusband being incapacitated following hu brutal assault made on him by Alfred Underhill. j Hamilton is crippled in one arm. Since Underhill attacked him last February, for gathering chips from trees cut on land which Underhill had Ueased, Hamilton's condition has grown steadily worse. The little income he received from canvassing was cut off. Mrs. Hamilton took in washing and did what work she could to support 'the family. Part of the time her hushand was confined to his bed and he iseeded constant medical attention. ! Loses Damage Suit. With hiB condition changing for the JworGe instead of for better, Hamilton entered suit for damages against UnIderhill to recover $1,500 for personal Injuries, with the mope that with it he could aid in keeping the family and to give his wife a rest from her hard .struggle. He lost the suit. Unable to meet the landlord's demands that the rent be paid up to the minute, Mrs. Hamilton was forced 'o appeal to charity. Hamilton, to aid tis wife, consented to being removed to the county poor farm. I Put Out of House. Last Monday night, after a cold vave had set in, the furniture was taken from the house and set out on the sidewalk. The landlord locked the house and left the family to Bhift for lUelf. With the two little children, poorly clothed and herself in need of more protection against the cold weather, Mrs. Hamilton stood on the Piewalk lm front of the house from which thej had been ejected and in the siieiitr
of a tree, tried to master the situation. There was no place to go. She had bo money and her children were with tier, needing food and shelter. "I had heard of the Home for Friendless Women, but because our family bad once been In good circumstances, before my husband became a cripple, my pride formed a barrier against a resolve to apply for help," said she today. Harkens the Children' Pleas. Her children's pleading caused her to seek the aid of the Home for Friendless Women. Almost exhausted from carrying one of her children and supporting the other, she arrived there late in the Sight and as she stumbled in the door ehe was given a cordial welcome. The two children and their mother Were fed and provided with a place to sleep. They were given a warm and Veil ventilated room. Finds Employment. Tuesday and Wednesday, the childten stayed at the Home. The mother egain went out to search for work and with the aid of Mrs. Thomas, the matron, she ' found employment and a two room house on South Fifth street, where the rent is within the means of the small wage of Mrs. Hamilton. The three were moved into their Hew quarters last night and from time to time, when Mrs. Hamilton is unable to meet expenses, help will be given ber. The annual donation day will be beld next Tuesday at the home, 306 frJorth Tenth street, when clothing, noney, provisions and anything which (itizens, business houses, clubs, farmers or others wish to give, will be irought to the home for the aid of amilies in destitute circumstances, pld ladies who have no other homes, Unfortunate girls and children. HELP TO FAMILY. fund For Bilderbacks May be Sufficient to Meet Immediate Need. Money sent to the Palladium to be tosed toward alleviating the distress of the Bilderback family has been greatly appreciated by those unfortunates. While the fund has not assumed large proportions, amounting to Only a little more than $40, it is enough to help them considerably and may be sufficient to meet the family expenses until the time when the grandfather is able to resume his work. WASHINGTO.n, Oct. 23. Fearing anti-ioreign outbreaks during the Mexican election the administration today completed its preparations for armed intervention in Mexico should this become necessary. Both the army and navy are in such form that they can be moved instantly. In addition to three dreadnaughts now anchored off Vera Cruz, the European cruise of the Atlantic fleet, which is scheduled to begin Saturday, has given the government an excuse to coal and fully provision nine of the largest ships of the navy. The nine big ships will not proceed at full speed but will cruise eastward so 'as to be in easy wireless communication with Washington for three days after sailing. It would be the work of less than an hour to change the route of the fleet and send all nine ships southward to the gulf. The preparations of the army for intervention is also complete. To relieve the Second and Fifth regiments of cavalry, which have been stationed on the border for several months, General Wood has ordered the Tenth and Fifteenth regiments of cavalry to the border. At Vera Cruz Diaz seems to be completely cowed by the measures taken by Huerta. He apparently is in deadly, fear-of-assassination. Diaz is allowed to go about the city, but his guards accompany him everywhere. The entire suite of the returning presidential Candidate was arrested here last night. It numbered twelve men, three of whom are army officers. Nine are accused of disobeying Huerta's orders and three are charged with plotting to assassinate the provisional president. All were removed at dawn from the barracks where they were imprisoned over night to the gunboat Zaragoza. There they will be courtmartialed. Unless Diaz agrees to leave the country voluntarily he probably will be taken aboard the Zaragoza ton night and taken back to Havana.

County Jail "Ghost" Frightens Prisoner
"The ghost" at the county jail has been worrying Albert Penn, colored, who is serving a sentence for striking his crippled wife. The prisoners have been telling Penn that some supernatural spirit inhabits the building and plays pranks on the occupants. As long as daylight filed the cells, Penn laughed at them, but when night
; came
.una i nigai wnen me men were seated around the long table for their supper, Rice Miller, turnkey, in another part of the building, began operating the dimmer, which gradually reduces the light until they go out. Slowly the lights failed. In awed whispers the men said that it was the ghost. Penn's mouth dropped open,

Effective, Economical Complexion Beautifier
(Julia Orff in the Clubwoman.) ' One reason I so strongly recommend mercolized wax is that it really takes the place of several different cosmetics, saving time, patience and expense. It is better than any cleasing cream, better than any massage cream, and better than any rouge, for accomplishing the results for which such articles are used. As the wax actually absorbs an old, faded or discolored cuticle, a little each day, the underlying skin which gradually appears, is clearer, softer, healthier-hued and more youthful than any cosmetic-made complexion. Spreading on a thin coat of this wax at night, washing it off mornings, In a week or so produces a marvelous transformation. Just one ounce of mercolized wax. obtainable at any drug store, wiil do the work. There's nothing better to remove freckles, moth patches. liver spots, sallowness, blotches, pimples or blackheads. Few wrinkles and loose, saggy skin, I invariably recommend a face bath made by dissolving 1 oz. ' powdered saxolite in 1 pint witch hazel. This jhas remarkable tonic properties. CAdvertlstmenU
