Winchester
Musician
Succeeds
WINCHESTER Ind., Sept. 2?. Australian papers hlgbjy praised Prof. Williams, a Winchester boy, who is now touring that country in vaudeville with his wife, whose stage name Is Katberfne Rankin. Prof. Williams is well known in Winchester, having spent b boyhood days here and he is widely known as a musician. He left Winchester several years ago and joined the celebrated Soasa band at New York city. While playing with this band he toured the world several times, thus gaining a wide reputation for his excellent solo cornet playing. During the last few years, while
conducting the Boston Cadet band, the musician's health failed him and he went West locating in the mountains of Colorado where he remained for several months. Regaining his health he returned to the East, and, after having played in many noted and popular summer resorts entered vaudeville, where he is now "making good." Mr. and Mrs. Williams arrived in Sydney, Australia, Tuesday, August 19, and opened their act at the Tivoli theatre on the afternoon of August 23. The morning papers highly praised the talent of the "double" and the Sun had the following to say: "Opening with a fanfare on the long Egyptian trumpets, Williams and Rankin later revealed themselves as cornet players of the first rank. Both are good soloists and as duetists their part playing is really charming. Mr. Williams has a tone which may well be coveted by the majority of players of the popular instrument. Always enunciating his themes "with fine expression, he phrases them with nice artistry, and he gets the last ounce out of his instrument in the way of color and ehading. His 'touch', too, is wonderfully .delicate when occasion requires It. In this way, when he played he enunciated the theme with a lovely pianissimo, worked up the climax with a long" and brilliant crescendo and finally returned to his half voice with a well-managed diminuendo, the while preserving a perfectly even tone and true intonation. The artists concluded their act with some fine calls on the bugle-horn, including the 'Last Post' as used in the United States army." The Evening News, published Tn Sydney on August 23, printed a photograph of Mr. Williams and had the following to say: "Mr. Ernest Williams, who, with Miss Katherine Rankin, combined in a new musical act at the Tivoli theatre this afternoon, has had many years experience as a bandsman in every corner of the world; has been through a war In Cuba; and today is acknowledged to bo one of the finest cornetists. He is also a composer of no mean order, has written a number of cornet solos and marches, and also several songs, aiid has been with John Phillip Sousa as -solo man. "He speaks with enthusiasm of his association with the biggest band in the world, when at Boston, in 1907, he was honored by being given the position of solo cornetist in a bapd of 350 performers at Mechanics hall which was enough in itself to strong- , ly impress the audience and it is generally admitted among musicians that this concert was the greatest that the world has ever seen." The Daily Telegraph of Monday, August 25. highly "'-rxised the talent Mr. and Mrs. Williams by placing them at the head of the list and "running the following story: "The program at the Tivoli this week has been notably strengthened by the inclusion of four imported artists and on Saturday night a packed house evidenced complete approval of the fare provided. The main attraction, liowever, was a really fine display of cornet playing by Mr. Williams and Miss Katherine Rankin. Both are meritorious exponents of their charming art and in solo work, and in concert they proved themselves artists of resource and ability. Prof. Williams is well known in Muncie and other Indiana cities and rhis many friends are more than pleased, to hear of the great success he is now making. While in Muncie, several years ago. he played with the city band and he has many acquaintances in the Magic City. He. Will remain' in Australia twenty weeks, after which he will return to the United States.
EDUCATIONAL NOTES
Five hundred and fifty-five persons attended the evening classes in academic subjects at the University of Cincinnati last year.
About $15,000 is earned annually by the boys in the co-operative industrial course in the high school at Fitchburg, Mass.
After 10 years of service a teacher in Schenectady, N. Y., may obtain a year's leave of absence for study or travel abroad, receiving one-third payment of salary.
A comparison of 625 star athletes of the Naval Academy with 580 nonathletes, in both cases from the classes of 1S92-1911, shows that apparently the non atheletes are in better physical condition than the athletes.
Medical inspection is a business proposition. In a town with 250 children, it is said for instance, there would be an annual saving of $5,250 if by thorough medical inspection the curable physical defects that handicap school children could be remedied.
There are now about 40 "psychological clintic" in the United States, according to Dr. J. E. Wallin. of the University of Pittsburgh. The first of such clintics, for the purpose of studying and classifying mentally unusual children, was established at the University of Pennsylvania in 1S96. -
"We are destroying the eyes of a large number of school children by the burden of continuous near work to which they are subjected," says Dr. F. Park Lewis, of Buffalo. He suggests as a remedy, in addition to the use of eyeglasses, reduction in the amount of work dependent directly upon the printed page. "Let us have more thinking and fewer books," he declares.
