TO ARRANGE MATTER Stephen Tisza, Backed By Hungarian Government, Takes Charge of Croatia.

Y'ENNA, Sept.., 27. Good news

comes from the eastern half of the

empjlre of Francis Joseph and It Is the more welcome as news from that unruly corner of Europe Is generally i of an alarming character. The Hun- j garlan government or rather Count Stephen Tisza is determined to arrange conditions in Croatia. To be able to judge the Importance j

of this news it is necessary to be I

afmlliar with the history of Croatia during the last few years. Since an arrangement was made with Hungay 45 years ago Croatia has been a country with all the attributes of a state, without really being an independent state. It has been fighting Incessantly for its rights of which Hungary has tried to rob it by one of the most unscrupulous means. Under the rule of Baron Rauch and Count Khuen-Hedervary, the province first saw a period of violence and corruption. Then followed a time of cruel

opression and absolution under the i rrtmTrlf Ralnnorch i n rf IVMwurfl f'nuai I

At first the rulers undertook to create hatred between the Serbs and the Croathians, but at last the Serbs discovered the ruse and the two races clasped hands through an unscrupulous government tried to coecre them by thenotoriouB trial for high treason, but. without success and since then Serbs and Croations have struggled together against Hungarian oppre-s slon and a number of attempts against the lives of the representatives of the Hungarian government followed. Now Hungary under pressure from the foreign department has decided to hold out the olive branch. Curva has been relieved by the popular Baron von-Skerlecz and in a few months the Croatian parliment will be convoked. How long peace will last is difficult to say, but but one thing is sure

if the new politics of the government j

is followed by a similar policy In Krain, Istria, Dalmatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Francis Joseph will strengthen the southern boundary of his empire and leave it in a less chaotic state to his successor, who

may then be able to do, what was j

hitherto considered impossible hold together the daul monarchy of Aushigher wish than to see this.

PARIS, Sept., 27. The French tele- j phone authorities have opened an in-; quiry which is believed will reveal a ; grave case of a corrupt business al- s liance between a number of Paris telephone girls and certain merchants. It is stated tha,t for more than a f year past five or more girls have been j

in the pay of a merchant, whose business they facilitated to the prejudice of his competitors or giving him communication immediately, while his competitors were repeatedly told that the number they asked for were engaged. This dealer is also alleged to have been permitted, by the help of the accused girls, to overhear the telephonic communications of rival firms, and as he did a great deal of speculation this co-operation of the telephone girls was of immense service to him.

ACKERMAN'S DOUBLE BUSINESS OF 1912

MOTIONS OF PLANTS.

Soma Form of Vegetable Life Have the Power of Choice. One of the chief distinctions between Tegetable and animal life is that animals have power of choice and of voluntary motion, while vegetables and plants grow only mechanically by natural law. But the microscope seems to show that many vegetable forms can move as easily as can animals. There is a plant called Volvox globator, so minute that millions of it could be put in a wineglass, which is seen to whirl like a top across the field of the microscope. Some plants found In our ponds, which are still more minute, move habitually, as with an apparent purpose. Darwin, who gave closer study than any other naturalist to climbing plants, stated that these seemed to exercise the liberty of choice. Their tendrils, in climbing over pieces of wood with holes, will try one hole after another until they find one that pleases them. He saw one tendril withdraw itself after having located itself in a hole for thirty-six hours. Other plants will run a long way over the ground, refusing to climb the trees in their path until they come to a peculiar species of tree, to which they at once cling. Harper's Weekly.

Choate and Depew. At an annual dinner of the St. Nicholas society Ambassador Joseph 11. Choate was down for the toast "The Navy," while Senator Depew was to respond to "The Army." Depew began by saying: "It's well to have a specialist. That's why Choate is here to speak about the navy. We met at the wharf once, and 1 never saw him again till we reached Liverpool. When I asked bow he felt be said he thought he would have enjoyed the trip over if he bad bad any ocean air. Yes. you want to hear Choate on the navy." Choate respondeB: "I've heard De pew hailed as the greatest after dinner speaker. If after dinner speaking, as I have heard it described and as I believe it to be. is the art of saying nothing at all then Dr. Depew is the most marvelous speaker in the universe."

Countess Helps Poor of Paris

PARIS. Sept., 27. M. Cochon. who makes it his business to obtain accomodation for families who are evicted from their tenements, found a warm-hearted sympathizer in the Comtesse de La Rochefoucauld, daughter of the late Senator Mitchell, of Oregon, who placed her mansion in the Boulevard I-anns at his disposal.

Cochon established something like i

seven families in the mansion, but objection was taken by their presence and as they refused to leave the place became known as Fort Cochon. They had to leave, however, and the countess then took them to her chateau at Bouglval. The seven families, comprising SO children, took pos

session of the chateau. They wer enchanted, but after a residence ot four weeks they are now very weary. Not that the countess has deeerted them, every day she takes them 4S loaves of bread, eight bottles of milk, and quantities of meat, vegalablea and coal. The trouble of the familiea of the families is that they cannot find work. The market gardeners are distrustful of the Cochon band, and the neighboring farmers will not employ them at any price. Th?H cannot work ia Taris. as the journey is too long and costly. Bougival is a pleasant place in the summer time, and the SO children are revelling in the delights of the chateau garden, but they do not relish the idea of remaining there when winter comes. They say that they will be unable to hold out, and will have to return to Paris.

In the city of New York there upwards of five thousaad building material teamsters.
