Twenty-Seven Nations Send Representatives to Gathering. BAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 27. James B. Sullivan, athletic director of the PBrtAmft-Paeific Exposition, who re

cently attended the International federation of the Athletic Governing bodies of the world at Berlin has extended an Invitation to those bodies assembled to participate in the contests to be held in San FranciBco in 1916. The strongest teama from many foreign countries have already given assurance that they will take part. The Panama-Pacific International Exposition sports tournament will be the greatest In history. The sports events will include almost every variety of athletics known to the clvfliaed world. Athletes from every one of the twenty-seven nations that have already decided to officially participate In the exposition will take part In the sports program. The program for the International sports has been prepared tentatively after a conference with the different governing bodies of sport in America. Among the events already scheduled are the International championships which will take place in the months of February, March and April of 1915 and again in the months of October, November and December of that year. Among the aquatic events planned are the college rowing championships and the championships of the National Association of Amateur Oarsmen. Yacht and motor boat races will be held in San Francisco harbor and thousands of spectators will gather on the Esplanade before the Exposition site to view these events. Sullivan is now on the continent. He will shortly visit England and will arrange for a number of the leading English professional golfers and several amateur teams to take part in the International golf championship, which promises to be one of the most interesting of sporting events in America. Days and weeks are to be set aside for the different countries which desire their particular type of work. A team of Swedish gymnasts will ac company the Swedish athletes that Ernie HJertberg will bring to the Exposition. The German Turners will have a week for their mass work and exhibition drills, and it is expected that the strongest gymnastic team that Germany can produce will come here to give an exhibition of their national gymnastic games. Another week, is to be given over to Irishsports and pastimes, such. as football, 'hurling, dancing and athletics. ; " Special attention la to be given to playground development, an invitation having been extended to the National Playground Association of Ame.-icA to hold, its congress at this exposition, and t is expected that every city in the United StateB that maintains playground activities will send a team of boys to demonstrate the type of work being done for the boys throughout America. Director William J. Lee, of the New York playgrounds, proposes to ask the Board of Aldermen for an apropriation to pay the expenses of 200 New York boys to the exposition. The latter hold the national public school boy championship trophy, which they gained at the St. Louis Exposition. A week will be set aside during 1915 for the schoolboy championships. The chief international event of the year will be the modern pentathlon, for which the Olympic committee has offered an Olympic medal for the first time in its history. It is expected that the four placed men at the Olympic games in Sweden last summer, namely, Asbrink Lllllcheck, De Laval and Gronhagen, will take part in the great event. United States army officials are making special efforts to win the coveted trophy, and several crack teams have begun training. For the first time, socoer football will receive recognition at an American international exposition. All soc- . ce rfoetball at tht exposition will be under the control of the Federation Internationale des Football associations, which is the controlling body of football throughout the world. It it stated by no less authority than Dr. G. Rudolph Manning, president of the association, that from the teams which take rrt in the exposition soccer tournament there will be teams selected to represent. America at Berlin in 1918. Tryouts will be held for all sections of the country for the selecting of teams to represent the various forts of the United States Army in the military competitions to be held during ono week in the year set aside for that purpose A Navy week will be arranged according to the time of the arrivul of the battleships of the world in the Sau Francisco harbor, where they will all mobilize In celebration of the opening of the Panama canal. Competitions will be conducted between members of foreign and American navies. The presence of battleships in the harbor, before the Exposition grounds, will add great brilliancy to the nava! events. An invitation is being extended to the National Baseball Commission to have the final games of the world's series played at the exposition stadium.
