y LIVES LOST BY TUBERCULOSIS White Plague Costs State $15,000,000 Each Year in Money Alone. GARY, Ind., Sept. 19. "Tuberculosis costs Indiana $15,000,000 and thouI sands of lives each year." With this 'Statement as a sort of "head line," Prof. Severance Barrage, president of the Indiana Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis, today electrified trie members-of the Indiana County Commissioners' associatl6n, which concluded its tenth annual convention this afternoon. In eastern states, the speaker showed, where similar laws have been in force for several, years, a remarkable reduction has befeh made in the death rate from tuberculosis and the net result has been many lives saved or prolonged and a saving of thousands of dollars- to the community. The dollars and cents side of tuberculosis and social workers and the fact that so emminent authority as Dr. Irving , Fisher, of Yale University, has placed the loss to a community at $8,000 for each death from tuberculosis was mentioned. This figure is nearly three times the one used by the Indiana association in its propaganda work in this state and for this reason the statement that Indiana loses $15,000,000 annually as the result of the approximately 5,000 deaths yearly from tuberculosis must be taken seriously, Prof. Burrage declared. jIFhe new law was so framed, the speaker pointed out, that in thinly populated sections two or more counties can join in the building of a joint hospital which would be under the control of the board of county commissioners. Just one life annually in any one county would make the hospital a paying proposition, Prof. Burrage contended. The benefit to the inmates of such an institution by being near their home, relatives and friends, was pointed out by the speaker who declared that tuberculosis can be and is being cured in Indiana just as well as in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and other western states and without the burdensome expense often attached to stays of even ordinary duration at resorts for "lungers" as they are called in the western country. His extrnvapnuce reached a climax over "Babi! and Bijcu." produced at Covent. Garde.i iu August. 1S72. The money was fount? by Lord Londesborough. and Koucicanlt (with him Planche) was under contract to produce something that mlckt be called dramatic.
