JUDGE a man by lv. o unions and a woman by her shoes." Perhaps that is carrying symbolism a long way, and yet there is no doubt that a good many women are judged by the way in which their feet are shod. For some years past the matter of a lady's shoes as atmost important part of her costume have been receiving more and more attention. For the coming fall and winter the styles are especially attractive, with a range of patterns and, materials which affords excellent opportunity for satisfying the most discriminating. There probably never was a time when the retail shoe shops showed a better variety of stylish footwear for

women than the season which is now opening. DUTTON BOOTS PREDOMINATE. This year everything is buttons. The button boot has been gaining in popularity for some time, but it has never predominated so distinctly as a style as at the present time, when probably from 75 to 90 per cent, of all the women's shoes are made in the button pattern ; and as the follower of styles keep his ear very close to the ground there is no better indication as to what will be worn than this overwhelming tendency towards the button boot. TTiis does not necessarily mear

sameness of pattern, ior while this type prevails, it is made up in so many combinations and so many varied effects that there is a very wide range to choose from. CLOTH -TOPS POPULAR. The leading material for fall will be gun metal and patent calf leathers for vamps with cloth tops. In fact, one of the features of the coming season will be shoes with cloth-topping. Fashion has decreed it and well-dressexl women have taken to it strongjjp ' While plain Slack corkscrew cloth will be largely in evidence, attractive novhv effects wU also be used in both

rolors and designs. Tan boots will also be worn, to some extent, for early fall. Indeed, it is becoming a common thing for a woman to have several pairs of boots and, to a large extent, she plans to have her footwear, her hosiery and her gown in harmonizing if not actually matching colors.

As to the proper lasts, in the more expensive shoe the narrow recede toe predominates. It seems likely, too, that for those who are always interested in the high style ideas, 10- and 12-button shoes will be worn to a considerable extent. This is in keeping with the tendency toward lower tops, but the popular height will unquestionably be 14 buttons. The medium round and medium high toe, which is sensible, comfortable and attractive in appearance, will continue to be popular with a large number of women, especially in communities outside of a few of the larger cities. There are also number of attractive patterns of laced boots being shown in the retail shops. These are designed largely for heavy winter walking-boots. Milady has found that for bad wea:her, for slush and rain, a heavy boot is by far the most satisfactory. Therefore, for women who are likely to be out or. bad days this type of boot must continue to be popular. As yet, there is an undeniable tendency, especially among the higher grade shoes, to lighter footwear than has been worn for the past few seasons. This tendency is expressed in th? revival of the turned sole footwear, with

light, flexible soles. Shoes of this character carry the smart heels known as Louis and kidney, or wide top lift types. One of the most important factors in women's footwear is the much larger use of evening slippers. The stores are showing unusually large and attractive assortments of evening footwear. We

spoke before of the tendency to match hosiery, footwear and gowns. In evening slippers this amounts almost to a necessity. Very few women at all interested in fashion care to wear an evening gown with slippers other than those matching the dress. Perhaps this has led to the carrying out of the idea also for street wear. In either case, it undoubtedly adds greatly to a stylish costume to have shoes and hosiery in the same color. The exception to this rule is the vogue of white hosiery with black shoes which is very smart at present. SLITTER ORNAMENTS POPULAR. Many of the retailers are carrying large assortments of slipper ornaments made of cut steel, rhinestones and various other materials. These are exceedingly popular. Indeed, a very large percentage of evening slippers carry some such ornamentation. Even in respect to the heels of the hoes there is a tendency towards the unusual, and in some cases the heels are made to match the buckle. Of course, this is rather extreme, but it is not the limit to which style can go, for. in some cases, evening slippers are being made with hand-painted china heels of color and designs to match the body of the slipper. This affords an opportunity for
