Preach Better Farming To Interested Farmers
I County Agent Cobb and Morris Douglas of Purdue University Tour Wayne County and Emphasize the Necessity of Improving Wheat Crop of the County.
too too the Cut
Practical wheat growing was the subject of two lectures delivered to Wayne county farmers, yesterday, by Morris Douglas, practical farmer and ptock raiser of Shelby county. A. D. Cobb, county agricultural
agent, brought Mr. Douglas here for; a series of lectures on farm produc- j tion, to be given throughout the coun-1 ty. He has also secured other able i
The first meeting yesterday was held on the farm of F. O. Underbill, eight miles northwest of Richmond pn the Richmond-Hagerstown pike. Fority farmers from that section of the county gathered there, coming from their homes in automobiles and carriages, and some walked. Meeting Held Under Trees. Out in the open, under the shade of several trees, a chart on wheat production, made after practical experiments in farming at Purdue univerjslty, was strung up between two trees. jCounty Agent Cobb spoke of the necessity of farmers of Wayne county to-operating with his department. He bald: "The purpose of these meetings is to bring farmers together, to ;hear the very latest methods of projducing, from soil preparation to harvesting the crops. Conditions in one jpart of the county will vary considerably to others in raising farm pro
ducts, because of different kind3 of soil and different methods of preparing the soil. The lectures bring up
I many new points of interest and each 'farmer can apply the points to his individual farm, ask questions bearing on conditions existing on his farm, &nd obtain valuable information from khe discussions for the betterment of the crop production and general conjdftions on the farm." Douglas Gives Advice. ' Morris Douglas, 6taff member of the
After Vacation Peel Your Discolored Skin
(From Broadway Weekly.) Women returning from the seaside with browned, reddened or freckled complexions will be wise in immediately taking up the mercollzed wax
treatment. Weatherbeaten skin had best come off, for no amount of "beautifying" will ever make such skin 'pretty to look at. The surest, safest, easiest way to shed the despoiled cuticle is with the treatment suggested. Put the wax on before retiring, as you would cold cream, and rinse it off next morning with warm water. Minute particles of scarf skin will peel off day by day, gradually showing ithe healthy, youthful skin beneath. One ounce of mercollzed wax, obtainable at any drug store is enough to imake any discolored or spotted complexion clear, white and satiny soft. ' Its action Is so gentle no injury is jcaused and the face shows no trace of jits use. Burning heat, Irritating winds and Sirt are such wrinkle-makers that the ally use of the following astringentonlc lotion at this season Is highly advisable: Powdered saxolite, 1 oz., idlssolved in witch hazel, pt. Used ias a face bath this is a splendid wrinktle remover and preventive. (Advertisement)
Indiana State Farmers Institute, then said:
"Experiments will be made on a ' small acreage of farms in different ' sections of Wayne county, with dif-. ferent kinds of wheat, in different ; kinds of soil and with the help of dif- j ferent kinds of fertilizer, solely to dis-1 cover the best wheat that can be pro- j duced in each locality. "The boy on the farm has a big fu-;
ture before him. The world must be ! fed by the American farmer. Scien-!
title agricultural training develops the talents of the natural farmer and his talents must be developed to make the beBt and most continuous use of
the soil. Farming is a science today
of as great importance as medicine
and the law. "The farmer must figure the farm his bank, have regard for the future generation and keep up the fertility of the soil.
"There are three elements in the growing of crops; nitrogen, which is the life giving agent and makes for growth; phosphoric acid, and potash, which hardens the grain. What Main Problem Is. "The main problem is to assist nature to make growth available. "Corn is king in Indiana, but wheat production has fallen far below that of which the soil is capable of producing. "England is the greatest wheat producing country in the world, with 36.6 bushels per acre last year. Germany is second, with 28.4 bushels per acre, and the United States third, with 13.9 bushels per acre. England is no larger In area than the state of Indiana, and produces more wheat yearly than any other nation in the world. Indiana produced only 13.3 bushels per acre last year. "Because of its isolated position, British agricultural scientists, to avoid a famine in farm products, have awakened the English farmer to tilling the soil so that it will produce a full harvest yearly. "In the first place, the water line should be 24 to 36 inches below the surface, for water held in solution helps growth, not water on the surface of the ground. Humus Manure is an absolute necessity, for it gives a breathing place to the millions of germs of microbes, earthworms, that are constantly at work tearing down the soil and improving its fertility. Turn Under Clover Crop. "Turning the clover crop under makes the best wheat producing soil. Clover contains the largest per cent of nitrogen. "The clover sod, when matured for corn, gives the best wheat soil. Nitrogen forms four-fifths of the air, and one bushel of wheat takes out of the soil one pound of nitrogen. This can be bought in the form of commercial fertilizer or obtained by turning under the soil. "Corn, oats and wheat, and corn, oats, wheat and clover in rotation are far more producing than the continuous working of wheat alone. Fertilizer Greatest Factor. "Fertilizer is the greatest factor in producing any crop. Fertilized soil in 1911 gave an average wheat yield of 24.6 bushels per acre, while unfertilized gave 17.8 bushels per acre in the rotation of wheat, cowpeas, wheat and clover. "Inoculation of the soil by putting moist dirt into the acreage produces
good cowpeas with large nogles that
are formed on the roots. "Plenty of humus should be put In the soil so that the treasure chests of nature can be unlocked and soil made to produce.
"The practice of farming is close. The farmer is working much ground. Work one-half ground and get a better crop.
down the acreage and cultivate a smaller part better. In Germany, it is a crime for a farmer to mistreat his ground. "The seed bed must be thoroughly nrenared. Clover sod is best for
wheat, corn and potatoes. It pays to i
plow deep, work down the humus and surface soil and make a deep seed bed. A compact seed bed, holding lots of moisture, produces more. Nutrition comes up from below, the water com
ing up in dry time from the moist humus in the deep seed bed gives life to the plants and not the water lying on the surface."

CONGRESSMAN FESS BELIEVES MEXICAN SITUATION BETTER
freedom in our sister republic. Yet the task was too great for them. Some Want Interevntlon. "There is some sentiment in congress favoring armed intervention in Mexico, led by such men as Fall and
Smith of New Mexico. One of the most powerful arguments advanced by these war promoters is that of military expediency. They point out that by extending our southern boundary 200 miles we would gain control of the Colorado river which would close ane point of entrance to the interior of this country in case of possible foreign invasion. "I admit that this territory should have been taken during the Mexican war. A mistake was made in not doing so at that time. The same mistake was made in not extending our northern boundary to the mouth of the St. Lawrence. But we cannot now sieze Mexican territory without placing ourselves in the eyes of Europe as a land grabbing nation. "At the present time, there sec(ns little danger of serious trouble with Mexico. But at the same time the happenings of the next 24 hours may materially alter the situation. If property is destroyed and lives are sacrificed we will be forced to intervene,
i in spite of our wishes to the contrary."

Douglas' Saying About Vermont, Stephen A. Douglas, who was born at Brandon, VL, originated the oft quoted saying, "Vermont Is a good state to emigrate from." This double eflged saying, which contains a compliment and a knock, is a good example of Douglas humor, which always bad in it a peculiarly Vermont qnality. It Is said that Douglas' actual words were these: "Vermont is a good state to be born In, a good state to be educated in and a good state to emhrrate from." This made the remark more of n "knock" than it is in its usual and more summary form. But when Douglas uttered it the audience of Vermonters received it with roars of laughter. New York Mail.
