AGED TIMOTHY LAUGHLIN HELD TO SA VE HIS LIFE

Man Who Has Frequently At tempted to Commit Suicide by Various Means, is Placed in the City Jail to be Closely Watched-Is Thought to be Demented.

I After having made a half dzen attempts at suicide within th past week, Timothy Laughlin, aged 6S, of 611 North Eighth street, was arrested yesterday afternoon and is being , held at the city jail for safekeeping. Laughlin has tried to strangle himself, take poison, hang himself and secure razors with which he intended to cut his throat. The aged man Is believed to be slightly demented ; as no cause can be assigned for his suicidal mania. He

has an excellent reputation for sobri- ! ety and is a respected citizen.

Swallows Paris Green. Laughlin's arrest followed his attempt yesterday morning to commit suicide by taking paris green which he purchased at a drug store with the explanation that he wished to powder plants with it. The attempt on his own life was thwarted by a neighbor, Mr. DeArmond who has a boarding house at Eighth and North F streets. The aged man's wife saw him preparing to take the poison and called to Mr. DeArmond to help her take it

from her husband. DeArmond did so while others telephoned for the police at Mrs. Laughlin's request. Tried To Hang Himself. Sunday Laughlin was found in the shed in the rear of his house in an unconscious condition with a noose about his neck. The rope was cut in time to revive him. The shed roof is so low that Laughlin's knees were touching the ground. Later he secured his razor which was taken away from him. He then took knives with which he attempted to terminate his existence, but was overpowered just in time. Laughlin is being closely watched at the jail. The police fear that he will try to hang himself from the bars of

! the prison with his clothing. He will i not be released until some arrange

ments are made to take care of him, where he can be under constant observation.

regularly, instead of being doled out to her by quarters. She will also expect you to play fair and aboveboard with her, and there will be no use trying to hand her any fairy stories about sick friends and lodge meetings. Above all, you may be sure that if you marry a business girl she loves you. She does not have to marry for a home, and a self-supporting woman looks a long time at a man before she makes up her mind to give up her latch key and her individual pocket

book for him. And when she does she is pretty apt to have one of those chronic cases of affection from which a woman never recovers. And it s love, son, that makes the wheels of matrimony go round without squeaking and grinding. Marry the business girl any day, when you can get her, son. That's my advice.

TRAINING PLANS Drills for Children in Lower Grades is One of his Ideas.

1

That physical training should be

made a corrective for the physical defects which follow hard study and stooping over desks in the schools Is the opinion of Robert Xohr, the new physical director of the city schools. Nohr has a number of Ideas which he hopes to put into practice in addition to directing the regular classes in the high school. In the grades he wishes to provide regular daily exercises under the direction of the teacher. These drills will be the simpler, lower forms of gymnastics, which

while furnishing relief from the hours of study, will provide & training in the fundamentals of gymnastics, thus making such instruction unnecessary in the high school.

This system would eventually make It possible to teach only regular gymnasium work in the more advanced years. The young physical director Is thoroughly progressive in his ideas, and be

lieves that the school buildings should; be made social centers. Te cites ex-' ample of other cities where the schools are thrown open of evenings as meeting places for young and old alike. Lectures and entertainments ' are given under competent supervision' which have proved beneficial intellectually. and in developing good community spirit.
