Fort Wayne Officials of the Fort Wayne & Northern Indiana Traction company declare that they will continue to poreate in Logansport regardless of any action that the city council may take. They assert that the council has no power to revoke their franchise, that power resting with the state alone. Anderson Because his wife rebuked him severely for losing a $10 till, Theodore Funk, 41 years old, left home last Monday. Police have been unable to find any trace of him. Columbus Bert Kocher, a local fisherman, jumped from an interurban car moving twenty-flve miles an hour, and dashed off through a cornfield to escape from Deputy Fish Commissioner Ehlers, who was investigating Kocher's catch. Petersburg Winslow, a town of 1,000 people, ten miles east of here, will have six tickets in the field this fall. The Democrats, Republicans, Progressives, Prohibitionists, Socialists and Independents are planning to enter the race. Linton The Vandalia road is running a water train between here and Bicknell on account of the drought. Mine owners pa?C$9 a car for the water. Odn The Indiana conference of tha United Brethren church will conrene here today, remaining In session until Sunday evening. Evansvllle Twenty-five thousand dollars has been raised for the construction of dry docks in the local Ohio river harbor. Muncie James Frazer is under arrest, charged with passing forged checks on three local merchants. Lafayette John Crews, 55 years old. was ground to pieces under an L. ,E. & W. train, near Montmorenci, yesterday. He was walking on the main track, when he heard a freight approaching. Without looking round he stepped onto the other track on which the train was coming. Marlon Supreme President Frederick J. Seames, of Buffalo, N. Y.,

opened the national convention of the Fraternal Order of Orioles, which is in session here. Lebanon "Chiney" Gray, of Kansas City, who was arrested during the Boone county fair on the charge of "bootlegging," entered a plea of guilty and was fined $500. Being unable to pay the fine he will be imprisoned in the county jail for 510 days. Worthington R. W. Buskirk is pursued by a streak of ill fortune. About a year ago his barn burned. A short time ago he fell from a load of straw, breaking his arm near the elbow. The physicians think that he will be permanently cripped. Sunday two valuable cows belonging to Mr. Buskirk,

I were struck by lightning and killed.

South Bend Former Governor Folk of Missouri, predicted here today that Theodore Roosevelt would be the presidential nominee of the Republican party in 1916. Folk says "It's in the air."

Intellectual Humor. The region of intellectual humor, which may be ronshly illustrated by such sayings as that of George Sand that nothing is such a restorative as rhetoric or the eluitn advanced by a patriot that Shakespeare was undoubtedly a Scotchman on the ground that his talents would justify the supposi-

I tion. The humor of George Sand's

epigram depends upon the perception that rhetoric, which onstit to be based

upon a profound conviction, an over

whelming passion, an intense enthus

asm, is often little more than the ub.-in-donment of a personality to a mood of Intoxicating: ebullience, while the hu uwr of the Shakespeare story lies in a sense of the way in which a national predilection wiil override all reason able evidence. A. C. Benson in "A. Laree."
