A Fiasco. The phrase "a complete fiasco" originated with a German workman, who declared that he could blow glass as well as an expert glassworker. A friend laid a wager with him to the contrary, and when the test came off the would be glassblower found that he could produce only a pear shaped flask (fiasco). Nothing daunted, be tried again, but with the same result. The story of the workman became known, and hence the origin of the phrase which is used in designating a failure.

TARIFF C0MMISSI0II Not Originated By N. A. M., Says Towne. (National News Association) WASHINGTON, Aug. 13 Henry E. Towne, of New York, former treasurer of the National Tariff commission association before the senate lobby inquiry today testified that the tariff commission, the convention of which was held in Indianapolis in 1909, was not originated by the N. A. M., but was the result of a meeting called by Henry Reisenburg of Indianapolis, a friend of Beverage. The N. A. M., said Towne, agreed at th inception of the tariff commission to ask $10,000 for its support. James E. Watson was employed from April to June, 1909, to represent the association In Washington. Towne said the tariff commission refrained at all times from diecussion of specific tariff rates and never appointed any candidates. He said the N. A. M. paid its promised contribution to the commission to Mr. Watson directly on the request
of Mr. Miles, chairman of the N .A. M. tariff commission. "Did you not employ Watson because you thought he could influence members of Congress?" Senator Reed asked. "Yes, the Influence that comes from ability and experience,' replied Mr. Towne. "Watson was to have been paid $250 a week and his employment was presumed to last during the entire special tarifT session of 1909. Watson was paid $37,000 in alL"

In some parts of the world, particularly in Germany, it is still believed that the upsetting of the salt cellar is the direct act of Satan "the peace disturber." And the habit of trying to avert any catastrophe which may happen by tossing a little of the salt over the shoulder is due to the belief that by so doing one hits the invisible Satan in the eye, which temporarily, at least, prevents him doing further mischief.
