CHURCHES ARE TO UNITEJE THUS Rev. Buchannan Makes a Strong Plea for Unity at Bethany Park.
(Pal indium Special) INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 11 That the union of the Christian churches of the country in the future is not an impossibility but a probable reality, is tlie assertion of the Rev. W. S. Buch anan, of Union City, Ind., at a meet- j Ing yesterday in Bethany Park. Rev. j Buchanan declared that he is ashamed j of the church in its present condition, because of the selfishness of Individ- j ual members. He believes that indi-1 cations are for a speedy eradication of petty denomination?! lines. Call Is a Loud One. "There never was a time in the history of our country when the call for Christian union was eo loud as It is today," said the Rev. Mr. Buchanan. "Union is in the air. It is being agitated by every religious gathering of all denominations. ; Whether all "wish it or not, it Is coming. Whether it comes one way or the other as concerns doctrinal views it matters not, for it will come God's way. Some persons are worried over the affairs of the church of the present day. I am ashamed of the church as it now stands, because the' men in it permit selfishness to crowd Christ out of their hearts and even out of the church. "The word 'go' has been the most powerful term in all languages since the beginning of time," said the Rev. Mr. Muchanan. "It opened a highway through the watery wilderness of the ; Atlantic; It leveled the forests of the New World and reared in their stead a community of states. It has put in motion millions of spindles, harnessed thousands of iron steeds to as many cars and set them flying from town to town and from nation to nation. 'Go' Is the ringing keynote of Christian life, whether it be with regard to the individual or the church. The Bleeping deacon and the sleeping congregation must die to make way for the progressive in religion, as the industrial and political sleepers have made way for the 'doers' in these lines." SHE LIKED SAILING. So the Wi9 English Spinster Lived Up to Her Contract. The following true tale is a most curious instance of living well on nothing a year without breaking the laws of the land. Many years ago a steam packet company of Liverpool wished to buy a piece of laud which was owned by a "stay at home spinster." as her neighbors described her. She told her land at a very low price, but Insisted upon a clause being inserted in the agreement giving her the right at nuy time during her life to travel with a companion in any of the com pany's vessels. , When the agreement was closed she tto!d her furniture and went on board the first outgoing ship belonging to the packet company. For years this wise spinster lived nearly all the time upon one ship or another, frequently accompanied by a companion, accordng to the agreement. This was always a persou who otherwise would have been a regular passenger, but who purchased her ticket at reduced rates by paying tne spinster instead of the packet company. The company offered her more than twice the value of the land if she would give up her privilege, but this she would not do. Her reply was. "You got the land cheap, and I like sailing, so we both should be satisfied." Beat the Author. "East Lynue" has enjoyed a unique popularity, both as play and novel. After being rejected by two publishers, it kept the printers of the third working night and day to meet the demand, and, what Is more, made abundant work for foreign printers too. for it was soon translated into most of the European and many of the orien- j tal languages. And it achieved fame; in another direction by becoming the I stock example of the defects of oun copyright system, for the many dra- i matte versions of the story into which j a comic policeman was introduced.' never brought the author a single penny in royalties. London Express. The Italian government makes an apropriation of $30,000 for the maintenance of a botanical garden at Eaki, In the Congo.

k S 1 MI s sirs?. ' t ." BRAND WHiTLOCK. WASHINGTON, Aug. 11.Whitloek, the literary mayor Brand of lo ledo, O., is slated for an important probable that diplomatic post. It. is he will be sent either as ambassador to Russia or minister to Turkey. Although Mr. Whitiock does not have the backing of the solid Ohio congressional delegation, as lie has always been an independent in politics, he is a close personal friend of the president, and with the latter's influence will have no difficulty in gaining the congressional endorsement. Songs of the Balkans. The part played by Balkan song in keeping fresh the hatred of the Chris j tiaus against the Turks in the penin- ; sula has been very great. Popular poetry in the Balkans has ended by j creating one unique hero, Marka Krai- i jevitch. He is a great warrior, combining in his own person the most not- j able qualities of William Tell, the Cid, j Don Quixote and Pa r.ta gruel, lie is! continually deceiving the Turk by all j manner of disreputable stratagems and ; always justifies the means by success. Marka is n great feudal lord, and he j spends his time in challenging Turks j to single combat. Hero-like, his sue cesses are prodigious. The new Chinest lished recently at dictionary, puhShanghai repre-1 sents five years labor of many of China's greatest scholars, and supersedes as the standard the famous dictionary published in 171G by the authority of the Emperor Khangh-si. Many scientific words are included in the new dictionary and many obsolete characters have been dropped.

Mrs. Edna Eikenberry Adjudged Insane and Is Taken to Hospital. ( f-ailauium Spe.-ll) EATON", O., Aug. 11. Domestic troubles, the loss of ail her property and money, and the sensational disappearance of her father, at the t-arne time of th? disappearance of the wife of a neighbor, combined to completely dethrone the reason of Mrs. Edna M. Eikenberry, 30, who was adjudged insane last Saturday by Probate Judge I Arthur I). Davis and committed to the Dayton state hospital. She was taken ; to that instiiutio-i Saturday afternoon by Sheriff Wertz. ' The case of the woman is one of the ! most pitiable that has come into pub- ! He attention. Three or four years ago her husband, Frai:k Rlddinger, filed suit for divorce, but lost. After that, action Biddinger, it is said, manifested a willingness to live with the worn- ; an. But shortly afterwards he left h?r for the second time, taking with him her money. A successi'ul divorce suit I was filed by Mrs. Biddinger, and the court ordered that the husband pay a certain weekly amount for the support of their minor child. ! Loses Her Alimony. j After the divorce Bidington was ' married to another woman, and ccas-1 ed the weekly payments for the child's ; support. For a long time his whereabouts were unknown, but he was finally located at Goodlettsville, Tern., ' and Prosecuting Attorney and ex- j Sheriff Boner went to that town to re-' turn him to Eaton for contempt of j court. Tennessee's governor, however, j held that he was making a good citi- ! zen in that state and refused to issue j requisition papers. About two weeks ago her father, Isaac D Eikenberry, for many years ! a prominent farmer in the Dunkard j ! settlement surrounding the Wheatviile j : church, southeast of Eaton, departed I ; for parts unknown, supposedly with j i the wife of Isaac Neff, keeper of a J ; small store at that place. Since their j 1 departure nothing has been learned to j ! indicate their whereabouts. Since her I father's disappearance, Mrs. Biddinger, it is asserted, suffered a complete j ; collapse. I Eikenberry's disappearance has i brought court action on a couple suits for money secured on notes signed by ; his wife. The Tree of Life. The banana is believed by some peoole to be the forbidden fruit which is mentioned ii the story of the .Garden j of Eden. In any c;ise. it is one of the j curiosities or tne vegetante Kingdom, being not a tree, a pnlm. .t bush or shrub, a vegetable or a herb, but an herbaceous plant with the stature of a tree. Although it sometimes attains n height of thirty foot, there is no woody fiber in any part of the structure, and the bunches growing on the dwarf ba- j nana plant are oTten Heavier rnat tue stalk which supplants them. No plant gives such a q-jantity of fowl to the acre as the banana. It yields fortyfour times more by weight than the potato and 133 times more than wheat. f " L L L JJ oi receiving by pnone should J f iL 11 ready tor the collector.
