DR. SMELSER GETS REAPPOINTMENT AS A MEMBER OF BOARD

Attempts of Society to Block Reappointment Is Unsuccessful.

(Continued from Page One) Bicians in Richmond are not members and those who are have sought to bar all but six or seven of the practicing physicians from working at the hospital." Dr. J. M. Thurston is a member of the Wayne County Medical society and ' said today that though he had not investigated the charges against Dr. Smelser, considered him a competent physician. "He is as good, I think, or even a little above the average of physicians," said Dr. Thurston. '"I knew him before he came to Richmond five or six years ago and have been in consultation and worked with him on different cases. I have always found him a fair and square physician. He has always been an active doctor and has been in the business I expect for ten or twelve years." Dr. Blossom, president of the society, and Dr. Stevenson, secretary, declined to discuss the re-appointment of Dr. Smelser. Both stated that if anything was said it must come from the society as a whole.

ADDITIONAL SOCIETY

(Continued From Page Five.)

AN ADDED INCH. The hot weather in Richmond this year has not checked the strenuous exercises of several young women, for they have a great and glorious work to do, and they are bent upon accomplishing it by the time the other butterflies are homeward bound for the winter. A prominent vaudeville actress recently was responsible for the statement that her eccentric dance had addded an inch and a half to her stature. Glorious! Girls all over the

country immediately ran to the vision she saw reflected. This is the day of the sylph-like girl, for none other can wear the floating draperies with success, but the means of reducing undesirable weight are an open secret now and are worked overtime. But to

j add height that is another matter, j and great joy reigned when young society buds who felt that they were ! a mite too small to carry off the new i styles learned that that too can be

remedied. Among them was a group of girls. They swore themselves to secrecy and rushed for a dancing instructor.

OFFICIALS REACH NO DECISION UPON TRAFFICJUESTION Indianapolis "Move-on" Ordinance May Be Adopted in This City. (Continued from Page One.)

Bond suggested that another meeting be held in the near future. At that time a larger crowd could be present and in the meantime President Jeffries, of the traction company, could send copies of the Indianapolis traffic ordinances to Mr. Bond for inspection. Should Ride Free. President Jeffries intends conferring with members of the public service commission as soon as possible to ascertain what arrangements can be made to permit policemen and plain clothes men to ride free on city street cars and interurban cars. He made this promise in a statement to City Health Officer Davis last night while at the council committee meeting. It will be impossible to allow firemen to ride free, because an earlier law made by the commission will not be changed, but a satisfactory arrangement might be made for policemen, President Jeffries said.

BIRTHDAY PARTY. Mrs. Thomas Newby was given a birthday party yesterday at her home, 129 North Sixth street. The hours were spent in a pleasant social manner. The function was in the nature of a garden party. She was presented with several gifts. At a late hour a luncheon was served. The guests were Mrs. Dille, Mrs. Thistlethwaite, Mrs. T. J. Webb, Mrs. Walter Woodworth, Mrs. Kelley, Mrs. Alden Mote, Mrs. Harrison, Mrs. Foulke, Mrs. Dulin, Mrs. Wesley Iliff of Richland, Mrs. Elizabeth Close, Miss Elizabeth and Miss Harriet Foulke, Miss Jessie Dulin, Miss Clara Newman, Miss Josephine Iliff, Miss Ethel Shelly, Mr. T. A. Mott, Mr. Alden Mote, Miss. Martha Webb, Master Richard Webb, Miss Josephine Harrision, Master William Harrison, Master Malcolm Woodworth and Miss Hope Woodworth.
