SPEAKS Ofl CHURCH

Tells of the Responsibility Placed Upon the Church In America.

Speakjng on "The Relationship of Christian America to the Rest of the World," before the Bible school of the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church yesterday morning, S. E. Nicholson, editor of the American Friei. declared that th position v.bicu the United States occupies geographically makes it peculiarly fitted to carry on the -work of civilization of the heathen countries. "It is the temptation of humanity to be self-centered," said Mr. Nicholson. "We are interested in our local affairs yet we are coming to understand that local problems are. merely a part of the problems of the entire universe. We find the same problems everywhere. It is aa inspiration to know that this Sunday school is a type of thousands of Sunday schools and that your problems are being worked out elsewhere. The problems facing a city are becoming world-wide problems; and so it is in business." Christianity's Progress. In the course of his remarks Mr. Nicholson presented statistics to show what the Christian world ha:-; done for heathen countries and what it may do for other nations. lie stated that China haa two millions of nominal Christians; Japan 70,000 of positive Christians, and in, Korea there has ben an average of one convert every hour since 1887. "The doors of Africa, India and South American countries are being opened to civilizing influences," he concluded, "and what the American churches will do for these countries remains to be seen, but I feel sure that we will continue our good work."

FREEZING BOILING WATER.

FIRST STEP TAKEN

FARMERS' CLUB

It Sounds Queer, but to Scienc It Is an Easy Matter. Water may be boiled and frozen loth at tin sranie time. The idea is a little startling, but the explanation is simple enough. The temperature at which water boils depends purely on the air pressure of its surface. If the air pressure is high the water must be made a good deal hotter to boil than is necessary at low pressure. On mountains, where the air pressure is lower than at sea level, water

boils easily at low temperature. In Plans for the first branch of the Bet-

cooking vegetables of all kinds a cer- j ter Farming association were formed tain degree of heat is required, and at a meeting of representative farmers where water boils efore that vejteta- and their wives at Columbia School, blew won't cook.
