MISS CULBERTSON RETDRNSFROM VISIT (Continued from Page One.)

Victoria was the only one that the crown prince would accept. At home, Theodore Roosevelt is one of the most distinguished personB to find comfort and encouragement in her writings. Her little poem, "Things Wrong," he keeps constantly on the desk before him. When she is at her home her mail every morning contains from fifty to seventy-five letters from readers, who write asking for advice and help, on all questions from the management of bad boys to the settlement of love affairs. Sheseems to have won the unbounded confidence of the people. Visitors at the summer home in Connecticut have become so frequent that walls have been built around the bungalow, Whose foundations are washed by thie waves, and signs have been put up -to keep them at a distance. People take delight in doing little

courtesies for her. Mrs. Wilcox and her husband do not own a motor car, but he says they belong to the O. P. A., which he translates as Other People's Automobiles. Their friends place their cav at their service and beg Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox to use them. Miss Culbertson told how Ella Wheeler Wilcox first attracted the attention of publishers. The thirteen-year-old girl wrote seventeen stories, and then made a list of an equal num

ber of publishers to whom she sent ;

them. All seventeen came back. This time she sent the stories to the same list of editors, but a different story to each one. Again they came back. Seven times she shifted the mailing list before any of her writings were accepted. Her perseverence had won, even though her stories had been written in scrawly long hand, on brown wrapping paper. Ella Wheeler Wilcox is not a large woman, but her appearance is striking. Her copper colored hair, dark eyes, and her vivid coloring make her very attractive. Her sharply chiseled chin denotes the untamable will. Miss Culbertson described her by saying, "She is the kind of a woman who would have been burned at the stake fighting for her cause had she lived a couple of centuries back."
