Marked in the extreme with success, both educationally; and financially, Eaton's first Chautauqua closed this afternoon after a session of seven days. Opie Read appeared Thursday afternoon and for more than one and a half hours entertained the large audience with his unequalled wit and humor. Ralph Bingham, on the evening program, drew an audience estimated at 1,600, and delivered an address highly educational and humorousi The Barnard orchestra rendered pleasing programs at both sessions. A,-sale of tickets sufficient to guarantee the success of an assembly next season has been made, and contract entered with the same organization, the Redpath company, of Indianapolis. The appearance of Bohumir Kryl's band next year is promised. LABOR IS SCARCE .IN PREBLE COUNTY ,:t (Palladium Special EATON, O., July 11. With a rush of work attending wheat harvesting and. hay making in Preble county, comes a decided shortage of labor and many farmers are bidding high for help. In many localities $3 per day, with board and lodging thrown in, has been '"offered. Co-inciding with .the scarcity of labor, it is noted that the wages paid are the highest the county has known. Dr. and Mrs. Kniese of Cambridge City were guests of Mrs. Kniese's parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Beeson, Wednesday. Invalid Very Low. William Hurst who has been an invalid several years is reported very low. Joseph Clevenger and his bride, who were recently married at Brooklyn, New York, are receiving a number of calls from their friends as a welcome to Milton. Oscar Hurst, of Centerville, was called to the bedside of his brother, William Hurst, Thursday. Will Not Operate. Mrs. Chas. Roark who went to Indianapolis with the thought in mind that she would have to undergo a surgical operation finds that it will not be necessary at least at present. Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Beeson and daughters were Richmond visitors Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Will Wallace and daughters, the Misses Dora and Edna, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Emmet Crowe, of Richmond, Thursday. The social to be given Saturday night on the lawn by Dr. Sweney's office will be held in the vacant room of the Farmers bank building if weather is unfavorable for outdoor festivities. Mrs. William Otto, and children of Brookville, are visiting her father. Chas. Mueller and other relatives here. Put Up Windmills. Horace Huddleston of Milton, and his brother Elbert, of Cambridge City, have put up seven windmills in the vicinity in the last two weeks. News Briefs From Connersville The first wheat thrashed in Fayette county this year was hauled to an elevator Wednesday. It weighed sixty pounds a bushel. On twenty acres the average yield was twenty-six bushels. Hagerstown On account of ie extreme heat that has prevailed here daily more than forty farm horses have died while working in the field. Millville Henry C. Shultz, age 82, one of the best known aged residents of the county, living two miles north of Millville, was found dead by his granddaughter, Mrs. Pearl Borroughs, with whom he resided. The funeral will be held at the Dunkard church near Hagerstown Sunday morning at 10 o'clock with Rev. David Bowman and Rev. Daniel Bowman in i charge. Interment will take place at the Dunkard cemetery.
