ADVOCATES SUNDAY CLOSING 1(1 TALK
Rev. Grannis, Speaking at High School, Explains .Work Done.
WOULD REMEDY EVIL
iThe World's Madness for Money is Folly, Minister Asserts.
Advocating Sunday closing for every kind of business, the Rev. George W. Grannis of New York City, spoke last evening at the high school auditorium, under the auspices of the Richmond postoffice employes. E. M. Haas, postmaster, introduced the Rev. Grannis. Mr. Haas explained that the speaker was instrumental in having postoffices and businesses In various parts of the country closed on Sunday. Mr. Haas explained what Rev. Grannis is doing to remedy present evils and make the people of the world and especially the United States 'realize ; that the world's madness for money was folly when to obtain it, rthe laws of God and man had to be 'violated) The people are becoming aware of the fact at this time, according to Mr. Haas, who gave much credit for the reform movement to Rev. "Grannis. Praises Ministers' Work. Rev. Grannis praised the work of the ministers in the country stating that they were the most sincere men in the world. Considerable work was lone by the ministers in the large cities to assist the movement for Sunday (closing of the post offices, he said. Sunday Closing Important. Mr. Grannis spoke of essential and fundamental questions which are confronting the people of today. As important as any is the problem of Sunday closing of every branch of work and giving to every laboring man at least one day in the week for rest and Sabbath observance. Closing- the works of the steel corporations' of Pittsburg on Sunday was explained by Mr. Grannis. It . was through- his work that this end was finally reached in that city. Though the owners of manufactories ridiculed the work of Grannis and his supporters in attempting to close the plants, they were finally convinced that their employee's services were more efficient and better six days out of the -week if they did not work Sunday, than when they worked every day. Health Was Impaired. Through, the influence of the reforming organization of Allegheny County Sunday School association of Pittsburgh, many conditions in the factories which tended to impair the health of the laboring classes both physically ' and mentally were remedied. Rev. Grannis attended a meeting of the association in a Y. M. C. A. in Pittsburg and presented the matter of closing the corporations on Sunday. The chairman of the meeting was opposed to the movement of "bucking" the alleged trust and said the association would not take up the movement. So great was the impression made by the advocator of Sunday closing that the other members of the association demanded it. The chairman of the organization resigned and Grannis, though a stranger to the entire body, "was elected chairman and successfully carried on the work proposed by him. It was found that the absence of men ifrom church was due to the fact that they were compelled to work seven days each week. "Death Wagon" Ready. The Jones and Lockland Steel corporation of Pittsburg was located in the same square where Rev. Grannis was at one time pastor of a church. "The death wagon was on three sides of the church ready to carry away persons wh.o were crushed or killed while at work there" said Rev. Grannis. "The conditions there are now improved greatly as a result of appropri-

The photograph of Harry K. Thaw was made today in New York where he was the first witness to go on the stand in the trial of his lawyer, John N. Anhut, indicted for bribery in connection with an attempt to get Thaw out of Matteawan. It is expected that Thaw's testimony will take the better part of the day. It is said that he is jubilant over his chance to appear in court again and that he believes it will prove a great help to him in establishing his sanity.
ations made by the government to remedy these conditions and reduce the danger of loss of life to a minimum. As many as 8,000 men were saved in the steel corporations as a result of expenditures of $750,000" said the speaker. The attempt to open the postoffices again on Sunday which is being promoted by an organization in Detroit is being bitterly contested by Rev. Grannis. Billy Van, comedian, is one of the leaders in the movement which is being contested by Grannis. A petition to have the post offices opened containing thousands of names and weighing twenty-one pounds was recently sent to the government officials' though Grannis was succe.-i.il in having the petition refused. Musical Program. A musical program was provided which included two numbers by Wesley Howard, violinist, two selections by the Richmond quartet composed of Ed Mote, Henri Kamp, C. F. Hutchins and Walter Luring. A solo was sung by C. P. Hutchins accompanied by Wesley Howard and Ruth Hadley.
