Board of Public Works Wrestles With Problem of "Amusements" in City's Biggest Park .
B. A. Kennepohl, president of the board of works and Superintendent of Parks Edward Hollarn announced today that they had purchased, subject to the approval of the board of works, a merry-go-round for Glen Miller park. The board this morning decided that Cooper's band shall furnish the music at the park during the summer and contracted for twelve concerts. Several improvements were settled at the meeting. Mr. Kennepohl and Mr. Hollarn were In Cambridge City yesterday to examine the merry-go-round and they settled on a price of 675 with the owner. The purchase of this amusement for the park, however, lies with the members of the board who refused on the recommendation of City Attorney Bond, to settle the matter today. No Action Taken. There are many objections to the merry-go-round and because of these, Mayor Zimmerman and City Engineer Fred Charles refused to consider the matter at this time. City Attorney Bond was asked his opinion on the matter of placing amusements of this class in the park but he refused to state whether or not be favored them. However, he brought before the members of the board, the objectionable features of the merry-go-round. There, is much smoke and noise connected with the operation of the engine and a loud organ is part of the equipment of the amusement. Initial Cost $3,600. Superintendent Nimrod Johnson of the city light plant was ordered to make an. investigation of the cost of installing machinery to operate the merry-go-round with electricity. He stated that the initial cost would be $3,600. Shoyild the amusement be Installed in thekpark, special legislation will be asked ijby the board of works to create a sepa'cate park fund in which the profits from the park amusements would be placed. The purpose of this would besto ascertain how nearly the parks could be made self supporting by the installation of amusements as sanctioned by council last Monday Sight. Concerts For Summer. The proposition of Cooper's band to play 12 concents at the park was ac
cepted by the board. The Richmond City Band which has played at the park heretofore, presented a bid of
$372 for 12 concerts while the bid of Coopers band was $12 less. The contract requires that each concert shall be not less than two hours. To Open Driveway. A driveway through the cut which was left after the removal of the tracks from Glen Miller park is planned by the board. This cut extends from Twenty-third and Main streets to North E street and one square of it has already been opened as a street. The city engineer will make plans for the driveway later. The Robinson Machine company at Third and Main streets was granted a franchise this morning by the board to construct a switch from the C. and O. railroad to the factory. In order to make the franchise legal, council will pass a special ordinance Monday night. Plans on Plant. Nimrod Johnson, superintendent of the city light plant, asked today that plans be prepared for the building of the new addition of the light plant. The cement and concrete base work is almost completed and part of the machinery has been set up. Within a month, bids for the construction of the building will be received.
