Municipal Ticket That Old Party Men Jeered Swept City.
1 NOT OF NEW PARTY
Watchman Only City Officer Chosen From Another Ticket.
(National News Association) GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., June 17 Allegan, the county Beat of Allegan county, Michigan, lays claim to a distinction that is held by no other city in the United States. It has a Progressive mayor and a common council composed of ive Progressive alderman. When the campaign for the municipal government w,as begun in the spring the Republicans put up a ticket that looked etrong enough to win. The Democrats, surfeited with? the memories of the victories of the fall of 1912, entered a body of competitors in the race that, to them, seemed incapable of defeat, while the Progressives, although satisfied in their own minds that they would eventually end up at the top of the ladder, placed a ticket in the field that was greeted with jeers from every corner, and after a few days little or no thought was given to it. . Then the Progressives demonstrated that they were real campaigners. They
got up early in. the morning, while the Republican and ' Democratic candidates still slept, and began their work of securing supporters. Win by Big Majority. On the day of the election they were ever present. They worked unceasingly. Every move that could be made in their interests was made, and as a result, when the ballots were counted it was found that they had
won over the Republicans and Democrats by a large majority. F. C. Castell, graduated in 1908 from the dental college of the University of Michigan, is the mayor. The five aldermen are C. E. Hoffman, M. D. Owens, Swan Sequist, Roy Adams and H. W. Mcintosh. Hoffman is a lawyer and is the prosecuting attorney of Allegan county; Owens is a manufacturer; Sequist Is a retired farmer and a man of wealth; Adams Is a bookkeeper, and Mcintosh is the superintendent of schools in Allegan. One Appointee Not a Progressive. That the administration of the Progressives is proving a satisfaction to the people is evidenced by the manner in which their propositions are received. Even the mayor's action in appointing Progressives to the offices of health officer, members of the board of public works and members of the health department met with hearty approval. But one office In the municipal organization did Mayor Castell suffer to exist with a non-Progressive man as an occupant. That was the office of city night watch. Notwithstanding the fact that the incumbent was a Democrat, the mayor figured that, inasmuch as he had filled the place for fifteen years to every one's satisfaction, he was entitled to another term.

"What will I do during vacation?" Many Richmond persons are asking themselves this question. Of the school children in the city who have been "turned loose" from the public schools, more than six hundred are high school pupils. Almost three thousand school children are un
der the age of 14 years, and many of them have made no plans, and the disposal of their time during vacation lies entirely with their parents. A Few Will Travel. Many of the high school pupils who will have three months time which they may call their own, have planned to visit relatives in other cities. Some few will travel, while others will spend their vacations working. Others have visions of summer camps at popular sumer resorts on small lakes and rivers of the state. A month in some large city, where there is a constant round of pleasure for visitors, is the dream of some, while a few have announced their intention of visiting country relatives. Difficult to Obtain Work. It Is very difficult for high school boys and girls to obtain suitable work during their summer vacations, and many young men are forced to remain idle because of a lack of employment in this city. Every year some high school boys seek employment in other cities. Special Courses. Some of the school pupils will study during the summer, either going away
to some special school or remaining
in this city to be tutored privately.
The high school summer course, embracing eight weeks of work in typewriting and shorthand, will be attended by several who wish to review the work or go ahead with it more rapidly, as a term's work will be given in that snort time. Summer school courses given by the Y. M. C. A. in past years have proved popular, and a number of high school pupils will study there.

EMIL CREBB HURT AT PORTLAND, IND. Emil Crebb, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Crebb, of Portland, Ind., formerly of this city, was injured in that city yesterday while on his way to the railroad depot in anticipation of coming to Richmond to visit Mrs. J. F. Hornaday, South Fifteenth street. Young Crebb was knocked down and run over by a sprinkling wagon. His right leg was crushed and bruised.
COMPLAINT ON NOTE
A complaint on a note venued from Randolph county was filed at the office of the county clerk today. Perry B. Rice being the plaintiff and Lonzo B. Thompson defendant. The demand is $600.
(National Newi Association) NEW YORK, June 17. Concerted action of the presidents of the clubs in both major leagues against betting on baseball resulted in the arrest of twenty-seven men in Philadelphia and the barring of several others from the Polo grounds in this city. The campaign against the gamblers will be followed, it is said, until they have been driven out of business. The Athletic-Cleveland games at Philadelphia were seized upon by the bookmakers as a fertile field of endeavor. The series is the most important thus far in the American League race. A watch had been kept, however, and more than a score of gamblers were located in the lower right field grand stand. They were arrested and taken into custody and charged with gambling. Detectives in the Polo grounds here have been busy for some time past picking out those engaged in the business of making books on the games.
