It can commercially be grown in only a few portions of the world, principally Florida and the West Indies. It is doubtful, should the whole state of Florida be turned into a vast grapefruit grove, if the market'would be glutted. The cost of planting a grape fruit tree and caring for it for five years, is $6.50. Eighty trees are planted to the acre, so that the total cost would be $520. They usually bear at three years of age, but five years is considered the period for the beginning of profit. They reach their highest state of production at sixteen years of age, after which they go on producing indefinitely. It is a hardy and long lived tree. Instances are on record where a single tree produced $50 net year after year. While the fruit is coming into bearing, truck' raising can be carried on between the rows, which in no way encroaches upon the growing trees. The President of the Florida Fruit Growers' Association last year picked 3,155 boxes from his 290 grapefruit trees which sold at $1.58 a box, amounting to $5,01 1 or about $1,670 per acre. His entire cost of production which included fertilizer, taxes, shipping, etc., was about $142 per acre, leaving him a net profit of $1,528 per acre. Our excursion leaves Richmond Tuesday, June 3rd, for Fellsmere, Florida, for the purpose. of showing ;home ; seekers and land buyers these drained fertile muck lands. All we ask is that you go and see the truth of these state-, ments for yourselves. $31.85 round trip. Stop over anywhere, 25 days time limit. See us for literature.
