ANNOUNCEMENT PARTY. A beautiful dinner party was given last evening by Miss Ellen Swain at her home in Pearl street, at which time she announced her engagement to Mr. Maxwell Young, of Mansfield, Ohio. The wedding will be celebrated June the twenty-fourth. The house was beautifully decorated for the occasion. The living room was very attractive. The decorations were in yellow and green. The guests .were served at Bmall tables placed throughout the different rooms. The table appointments were pink sweet peas, ferns and pink roses. The place cards were exquisite being miniature landscape Bcenes and painted by Mrs. R. M. Lacey, an aunt of the bride-elect. The engagement was announced on the name cards. An elegant dinner in, several courses was served. Covers were laid for Miss Ada Kelly, Miss Ethel Marlatt, Miss Grace Smith, Miss Hazel Roach, Miss Esther Coate, Miss Clara and Miss Fannie Kramer of New Hope, Miss Mary and Miss Ruth Peltz, Mrs. George Rone, Mrs. Ben Swain, Mrs. Walter Weidner, Mrs. E. E. Meyer, Mrs. Otto Heins, Mrs. Ous Hafner, Mrs. W. A. Parks, MisBes Sarah and Alice Swain, Mrs. Warren liill, Mrs. Wcisgerber of Chicago, Mrs. Clifton Williams of Milwaukee, and the bride-elect. Mr. Young is a traveling salesman for the J. A. RiRby company of Mansfield, Ohio, and is a most estimable young man. Miss Swain is an attractive young woman and is well and favorably known in this city. Their hosts of friends are most glad to extend hearty congratulations and wish them much happiness. Several showers and parties will be given for the brideelect within the next few weeks.
A paper pertaining to what missionaries do when it comes to emergencies was read by Mrs. "Walker. Mrs. Whallon also read a paper. A short business session was held after which
a social hour followed. Refreshments
were served. The next meeting will be held in June and will be "a children's meeting" in charge of Miss Ella Winchester and Miss Jennie Williams.
RECITAL A SUCCESS. The recital given last evening in the St. Mary's academy by Miss Lucile Carney was most successful. Miss Carney was assisted with her program by members of the elocution class, and Miss Marie O'Brien, Miss Rhea Fitzgibbons and Miss Rhea Turner. The parlors were prettily decorated for the affair. About the pianos were arranged palms and ferns. The flowers were ink and white peonies. Miss Carney is an excellent pianist and her ability along this line was demonstrated last evening by the manner in which she executed the difficult numbers. The parlors were well filled with the friend3 of the young people.
RECITAL THIS EVENING. Miss Mary Porter, assisted by Miss Blanch Luken and Miss Anna Harrington, will give a recital this evening in the St. Mary's academy. The program as announced earlier in the week will be given without change.
OUT OF TOWN. Mr. Earl Rowe went -to Indianapolis and Franklin, Indiana, today.
ENTERTAINING GUESTS. Mr. A. D. Craig is entertaining his sisters this week at his home in the Union pike. They are Mrs. Montis, of Dcs Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Scott of Brownsville, Ohio, and Mrs. Kanaga, of Fort Wayne, Indiana. He also has as his guests Mrs. Brannon, of Des Moines, Iowa, and Mr. Paul Scott, of Brownsville.
.. MISS SCHALK HONORED. .. Miss Mildred Schalk will play at an artists' recital at the College of Musical Art June seventh. Miss Schalk is one of Richmond's most talented musicians.
IN INDIANAPOLIS. Miss Grace Smith spent the day in Indianapolis.
DELEGATES TO CONVENTION. Mrs. Frank Veregge and Miss Alice Vore will be delegates to the convention at Portland, Indiana, the last of this week from Whitewater church.
EVENTS POSTPONED. ' On account of Decoration day a number of social events were postponed today.
DANCE TONIGHT. Several young people from this city will go to Cambridge City this evening to attend the commencement dance to
be held in the Pythian temple. An
orchestra will furnish the music.
WERE GUESTS HERE. Mrs. Homer Varyan and son, Mr. Homer Lee Yaryan, of Toledo, Ohio, who were enroute to Indianapolis to attend the automobile races, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Y. Poundstone, at the Hotel Westcott last evening. They will return this evening and will spend the remainder of the week with Mrs. Jennie Yaryan at her home in North Tenth street.
DANCE AT WINCHESTER. A commencement dance will be held Monday evening at Winchester, Indiana. Several young people of this city expect to attend.
ATTRACTIVE HAIR
RECITAL MONDAY. Miss Laura Gaston, head of the music department at Earlham college, will present a number of her Richmond and Earlham pupils in recital Monday evening, June the second at the high school auditorium. The program will begin at eight o'clock. It will be announced later. A special invitation is extended to persons interested in musical events. Miss Gaston's recitals are always very successful and are looked forward to with pleasure by persons who usually attend.
MRS. MATHER HOSTESS. The Woman's Missionary society of the First Presbyterian church met Thursday afternoon instead of today on account of Decoration Day, at the home of Mrs. Harry Mather in South Eighth street. There was iv large attendance including the members and guests. Miss Virginia Colburn, although unable to be present, arranged the program for the afternoon. Mrs.Fred White read an interesting paper on the life of Ion Xeith Falconer. Mrs. Pauline Jones read a paper on "Educational Value ' of Missionaries."
