EVANS WiriS BATTLE FROM ROSE TWIRLER Neff -Throws Wild and Sanders Scores Locals Field Well.
The Earlham baseball nine defeated the delegation from Rose Poly yesterday in a very close game by the score of 1 to 0. It was a pitchers' battle from start to finish, with the balance slightly in favor of "Bottle" Evans of Earlham. Neff, the Rose Poly twirler, is considered by many to be the best college pitcher in the west, having beaten Purdue, Indiana and Wabash this season. He was slightly off color yesterday, and threw the game away on a wild heave to second. "Bottle" Evans played the game of his life yesterday and cinched his place on the team. He pitched himself out of several bad holes, and although he was easier to find that the Terre Haute hurler, he played a more steady and consistent game than his opponent. Evans struck out eleven batsmen, nd Neff twelve. Earlham's single marker came in the fifth when Sanders, who played right field, singled and took second on a wild pitch. Neff's wild throw to necond allowed Sanders to cross the plate. On three occasions . Rose had men left on third, due to the good fielding of the Quakers. Score: R. H. E. Earlham .....1 5 4 Rose Poly 0 5 2

HOT LINERS I OFF THE BAT ! ; , The Phillies pounded out 20 in eight innings yesterday including three doubles, a triple and a home run. Cravath headed the swatters with five hits out of as many times at bat. Incidentally the Phillies garnered 12 runs while the Reds drew nine goose eggs. The White Sox engineered one of the "greatest ninth inning rallies of the season yesterday, scoring sixNruns, but their rally fell short and the Red Sox won the game, 10 to 9.. The two straight defeats of the Dodgers and the two victories of the Phillies has widened the gap between the teams to nearly 100 points, and it looks as if the dream of the Brooklyn fans of first place honors in the old league won't come true for a week or so at least, Those who believe in the spring showing of ball teams as a basis of "doping" the outcome of the pennant races may witness the following: The Giants took the measure of practically every team they played during the training series, yet they have had a mighty task in winning fifteen out of 29 league games; the Phillies, who were the easiest propositions struck by any team. during the spring games, and who w:ere extended the heartfelt sympathy of the sporting fraternity, have won 19 out of 26 combats.

Our music made us famous. It pays to support it. At the Coliseum. FIGHT FANS EXPECT INTERESTING MILL
(National News Association) NEW YORK, May 22. Fight fans here are anticipating an interesting
mill when Jim Coffey and Jim Flynn t
get together in a heavy-weight match tomorrow night at Madison Square Garden. James J. Coffey, the Dublin giant, is one of the most promising heavy- weight boxers in the game today. Although he had had no chance to meet any of the big scrappers, he has easily defated a number of fairly good men, most of his victories having been won by knock-outs. A few weeks ago, he defeated George Rodel with ease in nine rounds. Rodel was rated as a good boxer, but Coffey experienced no trouble In putting him away. Flynn is a veteran boxer, and hails from Pueblo, Colo. He has made a good reputation in the west, and should prove to be a worthy opponent for Coffey. Billy Gibson, manager for Coffey, says that while Flynn is not the most formidable man in the world by any means, he should be able to put up a stiff fight and give Coffey more of a run than he has had in any of his previous bouts.
