Soldiers encamped near the church, BOOIng that the flag had been removed, attempted to start a riot, but this was prevented. About 1870, a spire 210 feet high 'was erected at a cost of $11,000. It was the only thing of the kind In the city and attracted attention of the farmers for miles around. The only town clock in the city, at that time t as purchased and installed in the iepire with the first set of chimes. At the time of the organization of the church and for many years after, cnly German speaking people belonged to the church. As the children grew and spoke the English language, services were held in both German nd EngEsh. A fire destroyed the spire of the church on August 15, 1900. The spire falling, crushed through the roof cf the church and almost destroyed the building. The ruins were cleared away and work on the church now standing at, South Fifth and C streets was started the same month. It was rapidly pushed to completion and was dedicated July 7, 1901. S. HELMS RETURNS; LAUGHS AT POLICE
When Stephen Helms was ordered to leave the city yesterday and was taken to the city limits in thepatrol wagon, he caught a C. & O. freight train into the city, reaching here before the wagon. As the patrolmen passed him, he laughed at them and then ran. He was arrested again this morning by Patrolman Vogelsong and sentenced to fifteen days in the county jail.

The Name Lehigh. On March , 1812, Lehigh county was formed from part of Northampton county. Its name came from the Lehigh river, ting an Indian name derived through the German. The original Indian name is said to have beeu Le-chau-weeob-ink, or Le-cbau-week-1, meaning "the place of the fork of the road." The German settlers of the region shortened this into "Lecha." which Is still In use among the Pennsylvania Germans. "Lehigh" is the English Terslon of "Lecha."
