NEW LEAGUE OPENED Great Enthusiasm in U. S. B. L. Cities.

(National News Association) WASHINGTON, May 10. With a band concert, parade of players and the usual flag-raising, the Brooklyn and Washington teams of the new United States Baseball League opened the new grounds in this city with the first game of the season today. Simultantously with the game here, the New York and Newark teams met at Newark, Baltimore and Lynchburg came together at Lynchburg and the Philadelphia team met the Readings at the latter's home grounds. A large and enthusiastic crowd greeted the players of the new circuit when they came on the field today. President Witman, who recently completed a visit to all the cities in the new league, is very enthusiastic over the prospects for the coming season. The owners of the various clubs report great enthusiasm over the league and in each city, enough money has been subscribed to carry the team through the first season.

CINCINNATI EVENS UP IN NEW YORK SERIES

NEW YORK, May 10 Cincinnati evened up the series with New York by taking the last game of the series, 3 to 1. Marquard, who pitched for New York, had one bad inning, the sixth, when the Reds scored their three runs. Bates, who won Thursday's game with a pair of triples, led off with a three-bagger and scored on Tinker's double. Tinker went to third when Shafer fumbled on Hoblitzell, and scored on a wild pitch. Marsans singled, and, on Egan's grounder to Shafer, Hoblitzell was thrown out at the plate. Grant then walked and Clarke scored Marsans with a single. Fromme pitched great ball for Cincinpati, the Giants scoring their lone run in the second when Herzog hit a home run into the left-field bleachers. Score: 'Cincinnati. AB. H. PO. A. E. ; Dvnny, who recently defeated Pbll i Cross, of New York, acd Jim Perry of

IMttsburg. will be the sure winner of his battle on May 12 with Ray Broneon. of Indianapolis, claimant of th welter-weisht championship. 15 ron son, wbo has been training at Indianatolis, has adopted the policy of meeting all comers in defense of the title which he claims. The only stipulation Bronson makes Is that his opponent weigh in at 142 pounds at

trotted out for him, defending his selfclaimed title successfully. AH of his

bouts in the last year, however, have been over the short route of six or ten' rounds, and while Bronson emerged from his last year's campaign in the' short bouts with a great record, it is a fart that he shows to better advantage in the longer contests.

1 HOT LINERS I OFF THE BAT

The Reds got an even break in their series with the Giants, and if they continue to play the same kind of ball they did in Gotham it will be only a short time before they climb out of the National league cellar. The suspension of Stovall has weakened the playing strength of the St.

Louis Browns fully 20 per centi and the Naps and White Sox are moaning because the Eastern aggregations will have an easy time trouncing the St. Louis boyB. Too bad! The Yankees can't play against the Tigers all summer. They would emerge near the top of the American league if they did. Luderus. the Phillies first sacker, after going hitless for nearly a week, cracked out a homer yesterday which enable his team to romp home a win

ner over the fast traveling Cardinals.

But even with Stovall out of the game the Browns can grab off an occasional victory. They fractured the winning streak of the athletics yesterday, driving Pitcher Honck to the cooling shed in the first round. .The Red. Sox may win the pennant again this year, but it will require some mighty humping. The . Boston boys are over 400 points behind the flying Athletics, and no club can spot the Quakertown athletes eight full

games and expect to have an easy Lime overhauling the Job. j The White Sox bumped the Senators again yesterday, but Walter Johnson is due to be on the firing line today for the Washington athletes, and per-, haps there will be a different story to tell by nightfall. Johnson, by the way. may establish a new pitching record if he goes Into the box today. The record for consecutive scoreless Innings in 45, established years ago by Doc White of tho White Sox. Johnson has already of-

And now will C. Webb Marphy please issue forth and perform a little volpaning stunt from the most heavenward point of the Brooklyn grand-i stand? The Chicago gentleman said he'd make the 100-foot leap if the Dodgers took a series from the Cubs. The Dodgers have Just turned the trick Mister Murphy, where are thou? One reason why the Giants are in Arth place is their pitching staff. Rube Marquard. who tore off 19 straight victories last season, has a record o two defeats and one victory tn three starts this year. Tesreau. of whom great things were expected, has started sir games this season, and bas been batted out of five of them. WilUe and Ames are erratic Only Matbewson seems to be Bteady.
