' A Littl Previous. During the latter part of the war be
tween the states Basil Gildersleeve lay one day apparently at the point of death, surrounded by several members
of his family. "Brother," he murmured faintly, "I have, at most, only a few days to live, and when I am laid to rest I want you to have my new pair of boots in the closet yonder. 1 paid $250, Confederate, for them, and you are sorely in need of a pair." Instead of the expected burst of gratitude, there was no answer. Racked
with emotion at the thought of his great ;loss, the brother was evidently
too much overcome for speech
''Brother," persisted the future "immortal" weakly, "you mustn't have
any foolish sentiment a boot those boots. ' I will never be well enough to wear them again, and It would be pure
extravagance to bury me in them
Still, the brother, his face flushed, his heart too full for utterance, made no reply. "Won't you promise me to wear the boots after I am gone?" Gildersleeve pleaded. "Basil," stammered the other, crimsoning with confusion, "I've got 'em on now."

MURPHY SAYS CUBS WILL WIN PENNANT
NEW YORK May 9 "We will win the pennant by a margin of 18 games," said Magnate Murphy of the Cubs today. "We don't miss Chance or Tinker. Bridwell is six years youneer than Tinker and also younger than either Shafer or Fletcher, who are trying to play shortstop for the Gianfs. If McGraw hadn't let Bridwell go because of a personal altercation, the Giants would have won the world's series last year. This proves to me that even McGraw's judgment is not infallible. Bridwell in the best shortstop in the league today." "What do you think of Heipe Zimmerman's inability to play with your team?" "Phelan is covering third base acceptably, isn't he?" responded Murphy. "The enforced layoff, due to Zimmerman's indiscretion, will afford time for him to learn how to get his hat on without the aid of a shoe horn."

$50 IS SECURED IN THE TOWNSHIP
Chas. Williams, James Howarth and Charles Jordan returned this afternoon after an all day campaign among the farmers of Wayne township and succeeded in raising $50 for the fund to secure an agricultural expert in Wayne county. The farmers of Wayne township must give $150 of the $500 subscriptions necessary in the county. The entire cost will be $3,000, the state paying $1,000 and the county council appropriating $1,500.
Johnson, the Indian pitching recruit of th Reds, looks like one of the best pitching Snds in recent years. He gave the Giants the short end of i a 4-to-0 score yesterday. Everybody laughed at Charley Ebbetts last winter when he built a baseball plant with a seating capacity of 35,000. And now Ebbetts is laughing at the erstwhile laughers. If the Dodgers keep up their winning streak Ebbetts will have to enlarge his park. The Dodgers by beating the Cubs yesterday, are now within 9 points or second place and 25 points of first place. The White Sox jumped all over the Senators' pitchers yesterday and galloped home easy winners. The Red infield worked like chained lightning yesterday and amassed a record of four double plays. The lowly Braves bumped the Pirates again yesterday, and the Pittsburg fans are wondering just when their pets are going to stop skidding. The Athletics victory over the St. Louis Browns yesterday ' made the sixth straight win for the Quakertown bunch. John Evers, the "keystone king," put up a weird game in the field yesterday, making three errors, two of which resulted in runs for the Dodgers enough to give them a victory. A great butting rally In the ninth enabled the Cardinals to snatch a 5-to-4 victory from the Phillies. The major league baseball season to date has furnished some big surprises. In the National leaeue the Giants and Pirates were doped to battle it out for first place all the way. In-

has been fielding in sensational style and batting like a fiend. New York critics are calling him Hans Wagner's successor. . . But how can a man have a successor when he is not yet out of the game? Wagner, even though he has been in the game since a short time after the war of 1812, wishes to announce that he is good for a half-dozen years yet. Schultz, the left-handed twirler of the Yankees, twice fumbled a bunt laid down by Sam Crawford, of the Tigers, and the error, followed by hits gave the Tigers enough run to beat the New York boys. Five years ago Franch Chance and Ilughie Jennings battled for the championship of the world. Now they are battling with the cellar position in the American league stake. Owner Murphy of the Cubs yesterday bet a $50 suit of clothes with Owner Ebebtts of the Dodgers that the Cubs would finish irst or second in the National league this season.
