WILLIAMS WANTS HEW HIGH SCHOOL
Believes Agricultural Institution Should Be Established.
A . SPECIAL TAX LEVY
Is Suggested By County Superintendent Plans Discussed.
The plans of establishing an, agricultural high school in Wayne county
is being so strongly advocated and the demand is bo great that a tax will probably - be levied in Richmond, Wayne township and Center township, according to Supt. Charles Williams. The plan of the committee interested in the project at this time is that ar school be constructed in Wayne township between Richmond and Centerville and shall be built at the expense of Richmond, Centerville and Wrayne township. The approximate cost would be at least $50,000 according to the data compiled by Supt. Williams. Of this amount Richmond will be assessed about $25,000 according to the plan. Methods in the management of the Wayne county Infirmary will be improved when the agricultural expert proposed for Wayne county takes charge of the work at the farm and the agricultural work in the schools. The plan at present is to raise small crops of corn, wheat and other grains on the plots of ground operated by the schools and conduct experimental and
scientific stock raising on the county farm. It is planned that two agricultural schools will eventually be maintained In the county. The one between Richmond and Centerville will be only for the residents of the assessed townships. This school may be enlarged to such an extent that It will accommodate all of the eastern townships of Wayne county. The second school will probably be located in Jackson township according to the plans of Supt. Williams. By the school being located in that township the experiments on the county poor farm can be studied and the work of all three institutions can easily be looked after by the person appointed from Purdue University for the work. The option secured on the Sutton farm west of the Country Club on the National road west of the city is considered reasonable. x That many young men in Richmond will attend the school is predicted by the school authorities. It is believed that the school will be a means of
building up the farms and placing them on a more scientific basis of operation. It is believed by the officials who advocated the law that it will result in many people returning to farms According to the law previously in force It would be necessary to raise $25,000 by subscription before any money would be given by, the state department for the institution. The law further prohibited the raising of funds by taxation. The officials believe the $500 could be raised in Richmond alone though it is their intention of asking the farmers to subscribe the entire amount.
