BLAZE AT SHERIDAN Little Town Suffers a Very Heavy Loss Big Fire at Knightsville, Ind. (National News Association) PERU,; Ind.; May 5. An Investigation was in progress today to solve the mysterious origin of a fire which started in an old caboose of a train in the Chesapeake & Ohio railroad shops aft midnight, spread to the paint shop of the railroad company and caused a loss of $125,000 before fire;men succeeded in gaining control of !the blaze. Fanned by strong winds ! flaming pieces oftimber were scattered over various sections of the town, and for several hours it was .feared i that the city was doomed to' destruction. ? SHERIDAN'S BIG BLAZE. SHERIDAN, Ind., May 5. A dozen i persons were more or less seriously injured and a property loss of $150,000 sustained here Sunday by a blaze that swept away two blocks and threatened the entire city. A thirty-mile gale fanned the flames and caused them to spread rapidly. iAId was called ' from neighboring towns and from Indianapolis. Burning 'bits of wood were carried hundreds 'of feet and many incipient fires started, but these were, for the most part, extinguished -without material loss. , The entire population was soon out assisting in fighting the flames and in saving property from the buildings. The blaze crossed Main street and rapidly ate its way through the buildings on two blocks. Merchants on the east side, lost their all. Those on the west side were able to save some of their portable goods. Two brick buildings in' the path of the fire, situated at some distance ttom each other served to check the i onrush- of the flames and saved the Residence district beyond from them. Bucket brigades were hastily organised and men worked ' feeverishly to prevent the spread of the flames. Their task was almost hopeless, however, because of the terrific wind wnich carried - the flames from one building to ' another with incredible swiftness. Church la Burned. Three blocks from the scene of the fire a burning ember carried by the wind alighted on the roof of the Wesleyan Methodist church and before the volunteer brigade reached the flames from the main fire, it was totally destroyed. The parsonage which adjoined the church, and .which was occupiew by T..J. Lee, pastor, was also destroyed, the loss on the two buildings being estimated at $5,000. Farm outbuildings and. a stack of hay in a field more than half a mile from the scene of ; the fire caught from naming embera, which were carSled by the stiff wind, and were burn-

The loss in the country, however, was slight. Although the flames held sway less than three hours, nothing but a heap of ruins remains to mark the spot upon which many of Sheridan's most substantial business buildings stood. Hundreds of farmers, who heard of the fire on rural telephone lines or saw the smoke and flames, drove to the scene in automobiles or buggies, and many were of great assistance in aiding the bucket brigades. Frankfort and Indianapolis were called on for aid and both cities responded. Firemen with chemical extinguishers made the trip from Frankfort in forty minutes in an automobile. A special train conveyed an automobile combination hose wagon and engine from the Thirty-eighth street station in Indianapolis. KNIGHTSVILLE BLAZE. KNIGHTSVILLE, Ind., May 5. Fire late last night destroyed several business houses here, causing a total loss of $10,000. The Knightsville City Hall was destroyed, and all of the records of the city burned with it. The postoffice was burned and only one sack of mail was saved. It is thought the Are was caused by a defective flue in the D. V. Martin drug store. Jack Johnson Being Tried For Alleged While Slavery
CHICAGO, May 5. Jack Johnson, the negro pugilist, was called to trial before Federal Judge "Carpenter today on charges of violating . the federal white slave law. Johnson's white wife, who was Lucile Cemeron, a 19-year-old Minneapolis girl, was not in court. Johnson appeared slightly nervous when the attorneys began the questioning of the veniremen. Belle Schreiber, the white manicurist at a Milwaukee hotel and former burlesque actress, who will be the principal witness in the trial, was in an anteroom guarded by deputy sheriffs. The government planned to call her as the flret witness. Crowds of curious persons attempted to gain admittance to the courtroom, but they were barred after the seating capacity had been filled. "Yank" Kenney, one of Johnson's trainers for the Jeffries-Johnson fight, also will take the stand against his former negro friend. Three Women Figure in Case. Three white women figure prominently in the case. One of these, Etta Duryea Johnson, former society leader of Brooklyn, is dead, a suicide. Another, Lucile Cameron, is now the negro's wife. The third, spurned after the black had lavished gifts and fa vors upon her, turned nemesis, fur- j nished the evidence on which the in-J dictments were based. The woman,! Belle Schreiber, who is alleged by the government to have traveled about the country with Johnson and to have been known as his wife, will take the stand to tell the story that will convict him, if the government sustains its case. Aside from the recital of the dramatic story of the girl, lawyers who have been watching the proceedings, find the chief point of interest in the i contention of the government that the l interstate transportation of a woman j MISCELLANEOUS. for immoral purposes, although there was no intent to gain financially by the transaction, is a violation of the Mann act. Undoubtedly the negro's attorneys will make a sensational attack on the contention of the government, and the fight against the constitutionality of the white slave act is expected to bring out unusual points. In some similar cases trial courts have held that such interstate transportation is not a violation of the act. Supreme Court's Decision. An appeal to the supreme court in habeas corpus proceedings at the outset of the Johnson case, attacking the constitutionality of the act Was dismissed without reviewing the law on the ground that such questions should first come up in the trial court. The difficulties which culminated in the present trial of the negro bruiser began after the champion decided to open the Cafe de Champion, a saloon and cafe, in Chicago. The doors were swung open July 11. Two months later, September 12, Etta D,uryea Johnson, divorced wife of an eastern society man, killed herself in her rooms over this saloon. Johnson's relations with other women about the place are said to have been the chief cause for her act. The cafe became known as a resort for whites and blacks. It was here shortly after Mrs. Johnson's suicide that Mrs. F. Cameron Falconet of Minneapolis, sought her daughter Lu
cile Cameron, and it was then, that her name was first connected with that of the negro. The cafe was clos ed by the city in October. After Johnson refused to tell the girl's mother where her daughter was hiding, and after he is alleged to have boasted to her that he could "get any white woman he wanted," SODA. Mrs. Falconet wove the first mesh of the net that ensnared Johnson. Charge of Abduction Made. On October 1 she swore out a warrant charging Johnson with abducting Lucile. The girl was arrested, as well as Johnson: The girl was held for grand Jury investigation. The federal authorities became interested. The Cameron girl was sent before the federal Jurors. Evidence that she had been brought into the- state by Johnson could not be obtained and the abduction charge was shown to be groundless and was eventually dis missed, It was then that Belle Schreiber cam into the case. It was said that she voluntarily offered to testify. The Schreiber woman figured with Johnson from the time of his fight with Jeffries at Reno. She was with him in half a dozen cities and was known as his wife. In Detroit, one evening, after Johnson had been attracted by the Duryea woman, he quarreled with the Schreiber girl. He Btruck her, choked her and tore from her ears the diamond ear rings he had given her. It was in revenge for this, aid because of jealousy, it is said, that she offered to come before ths federal grand Jury.
