RELATIVES MAKING AN INVESJIGATION Parents of H. Snavely, Reported to Have Attempted Suicide.
Nothing could be ascertained relative to the report that Hubert Snavely, 25, of this city, attempted to end his life yesterday by drinking acid in front of the Edwards hotel on Illinois street, in Indianapolis, although local relatives of the young man claim that the reports are false. Mr. and Mrs. John Snavely, parents of Hubert Snavely, Ralph and Walter Snavely, brothers, left for Indianapolis early this morning to make an investigation, as they have been unable to learn any details either by telegraph or telephone. The only report received stated that Snavely will probably recover. Mrs. Walter Snavely, sister-in-law, stated that none of the family believed the report which stated that the man drank acid, saying that he did not want to live. No reason for such action can be given by relatives, who state that although Snavely had been ' In poor health for some time, he would not commit such an act as the reported. Mrs. Walter Snavely said: "We are trying to And out more about the matter, but we do not believe the report is true. It is probably a mistake. We have received no report except those in the newspapers." Hubert Snavely was In the navy for three years, and at the end of that time returned to Richmond. He has been employed at Indianapolis the past six months. iJEFFERSON TOWNSHIP HAS 632 VOTERS NOW Trustee C. I. WESTERN SHIPPERS OPPOSE NEW RATES
(National News Association) CHICAGO, May 2. Western shippers, including a large number of Chicago firms today planned action to oppose the proposed increase in freight rates of five per cent announced yesterday by fifty:two eastern railroads. An organization will be formed to combat the advance in shipping rates and an attempt will be made to compel the railroads to show that their demand for the advance is reasonable. II RAISED" HIM FOUR Police Judge Changes Fine of John Black. Although he was still in an intoxicated condition, John Black, who was arrested at 8 o'clock this morning for public intoxication, was tried in police court this morning and pleaded guilty to the charge. He was fined $5 and cost, which he paid. He will be kept in the city jail until tomorrow morning in order that he may become sober i before starting work. When the charge of public intoxication was read, Black stepped from the chair in which he was seated, and staggering to the judge's bench, said to Mayor Zimmerman, "Yes, sir, I'm guilty. You bet I'm guilty." "One dollar and costs," said the mayor. "You bet, I'm drunk," continued Black, "I'm drunker than that." "Five dollars and costs," added the mayor, leaving the bench. To Leave City. George E. Penn, who was arrested yesterday afternoon at Fifth street and National avenue, West Richmond, promised this morning in police court to leave the city at- once. Penn was arrested on the complaints of residents of National avenue, who telephoned to police headquarters that there was a "man either drunk or dead drunk lying in the gutter. Patrolman Vogelsong was sent to the place and found the man sleeping peacefully. Penn was given the choice of a fine of $1 and costs or the opportunity to leave the city. He elected the latter.
